Rethink 4.88s if you plan on anything bigger than 33s in the future.
The difference is, you look like you know what you're doing.
I'm still beating the rig up and learning what I'm doing.![]()
3.73's on the 5-speed AX-15 has been one of the main weak links though.
More than once I've said to myself "I wish I would've just bought an auto..."
Excited to see how the 4.88's feel.
Hopefully it helps give me that consistent crawl speed I'm itching for, versus the 3k RPM clutch burning masterpiece I've got right now.
NGL I am kinda on the same side of the fence as Jerry on these... Do wish I had one for winching still, though
3k rpm at 75mph is a good goal.
I’m thinking of getting one for my auto, solely for winching.
I do plan to go to 35's soon after the re-gear.
According to the Grimm Jeeper Calculator, with my current transmission...
4.88's put me at 2944 rpm's @75mph.
5.13's put me at 3095 rpm's @75mph.
...
I do plan to go to 35's soon after the re-gear.
Opted for 4.88's just because that difference is so minimal.
Did I make a mistake?
My intention was to regear to 5.13, but then other things happened.![]()
Yes. That minimal difference will make your jeep that much more enjoyable if you go with 5.13. There are plenty of us here in CO that have gone to 5.13s and prefer the 5.13s over the 4.88s. I can hold 60 mph cresting Eisenhower Tunnel.
That's upsetting.
I debated on 4.88's vs 5.13's for 2 months, and finally pulled the trigger on the 4.88's.
Paid for, and parts are on the way, as well as ARB's.
I guess I'll run them awhile, and swap out later if needed.![]()
FWIW I am on 33s and plan on 5.13s as well. I am not doing it twice
I'd probably go lower if you could though on the 30/35
Yeah, forsure. It's gonna be expensive to change your plans and redo things. I'm sure you realize that already. Can be a balancing act in what you're willing do to/pay for and what you're willing to stick with for awhile. This was my initial outlook on it.
I put my hands on a set of Revolution Dana 30 5.13's that had a stripped pinion, and decided to go for the 4.88's instead.
Something about seeing it side by side with 4.88's turned me off.
I also have plans to swap a 241 case soon, so that'll pull a lot of low end crawl ratio back into the mix.
BUT, the front axle is irrelevant to me as of right now, because i'm steady on the look for a well priced 44 front.
So, if you can't tell, i'm in a bit of an in-between, and chances are the gears are going to be done twice either way.
@zachpekee: In other words, he wussed out on being the forum test monkey and didn't go 5.89s.
