Colorado Daily-Driven Trail Warrior

I don't have a hand throttle. I do understand and and see the benefits of an auto, but they are in no means required to go have fun or make obstacles. I have never looked at an obstacle and thought I was not going to try it because I have a manual nor have I ever thought "if I had an auto, I would try that" to me that is just ludicrous thinking. Perfect is the enemy of good. Some think they have to have the perfect setup to go have fun, I just go have fun, figure out what does or does not work, make changes, go have fun (repeat).

I haven't read any of this thread prior to basket tagging me but if it is a discussion on whether or not to swap a manual for an auto, that is all personal preference. For me; I would much prefer to invest the time/money into having a proper working suspension setup, lockers and proper gearing, getting the tummy tucked as high as possible, 4:1 or lower transfer case, good set of tires and beadlocks, and upgrading axles, way before I ever thought about spending the money to swap transmissions. However, the next guy may just prefer an auto and wants to do that first off, to each his own.

Rethink 4.88s if you plan on anything bigger than 33s in the future.

4.88's on an AX-15?

The only gear I could go higher than that is 5.13, since i'm limited by the Dana 30 front axle.

But 5.13 vs 4.88 is a whole can of worms.
Ultimately, the RPM difference is less than 200rpm at any speed between the two.

3k rpm at 75mph is a good goal. Even from the factory, the 32rh was geared for that.

5.13s and 35s (also limited due to the hpd30).

4.88s are a good choice for 33s. But like I mentioned, if you ever think of going to 35s, then go ahead and gear for it now with 5.13s

The difference is, you look like you know what you're doing.
I'm still beating the rig up and learning what I'm doing. :ROFLMAO:

3.73's on the 5-speed AX-15 has been one of the main weak links though.
More than once I've said to myself "I wish I would've just bought an auto..."
Excited to see how the 4.88's feel.
Hopefully it helps give me that consistent crawl speed I'm itching for, versus the 3k RPM clutch burning masterpiece I've got right now.

If you think there is any chance of 35" tires any time soon, get 5.13 gears right now instead.

Tworley and I are both former Team 33s. And I think we both regret not doing 35s sooner.

I do plan to go to 35's soon after the re-gear.
According to the Grimm Jeeper Calculator, with my current transmission...

4.88's put me at 2944 rpm's @75mph.
5.13's put me at 3095 rpm's @75mph.

Opted for 4.88's just because that difference is so minimal.
Did I make a mistake?

Yes. 4.88 is very nice for 33s. It was never as good with 35s. My intention was to regear to 5.13, but then other things happened. 🤫

Also, this is the more accurate tire size for 35s...

NV3550/33.875"/4.88=2832rpm @ 75mph
NV3550/33.875"/5.13=2977rpm @ 75mph

Ax15 vs nv3550 is the same for this purpose.

Yes. That minimal difference will make your jeep that much more enjoyable if you go with 5.13. There are plenty of us here in CO that have gone to 5.13s and prefer the 5.13s over the 4.88s. I can hold 60 mph cresting Eisenhower Tunnel.

That's upsetting.
I debated on 4.88's vs 5.13's for 2 months, and finally pulled the trigger on the 4.88's.
Paid for, and parts are on the way, as well as ARB's.

Was under the impression that 4.56 was "the best", but being in CO and liking trails I decided to go deeper.
Thought the 200rpm difference wouldn't hurt much. Maybe I goofed.

I guess I'll run them awhile, and swap out later if needed.

Send the gears back. You'll pay double later to fix your mistake.

FWIW I am on 33s and plan on 5.13s as well. I am not doing it twice

I'd probably go lower if you could though on the 30/35

This was my initial outlook on it.

I put my hands on a set of Revolution Dana 30 5.13's that had a stripped pinion, and decided to go for the 4.88's instead.
Something about seeing it side by side with 4.88's turned me off.

I also have plans to swap a 241 case soon, so that'll pull a lot of low end crawl ratio back into the mix.

BUT, the front axle is irrelevant to me as of right now, because i'm steady on the look for a well priced 44 front.

So, if you can't tell, i'm in a bit of an in-between, and chances are the gears are going to be done twice either way.

Yeah, forsure. It's gonna be expensive to change your plans and redo things. I'm sure you realize that already. Can be a balancing act in what you're willing do to/pay for and what you're willing to stick with for awhile.

Id recommend reading the forums and having the best idea you can of what you need to do the wheeling you want but it sounds like you're already doing it. I've waffled on alot of these decisions myself in here, they are rarely objective answers since they all depend on your wheeling interests and area and etc, you know?

So idk. If you want 5.13s and they can get you different gears, cool. If not, 4.88s aren't horrible. They won't be ideal on 35s but they'll be ok. I'd wonder if it'd still be better than 33s on 3.73s or 3.55s anyways
