Hello, reading in the forum I saw a topic concerning the 2005-2006 tjs who have an OPDA problem. Mine, according to the data I have, should be a 2006, how can I know if I will have the problem of the opda? At the moment I'm at 92k km, and I've never heard any strange noise. I know for sure that Jeep called her back for a clutch problem, solved under warranty, but I don't know anything else because in Italy she arrived in 2009 and the first three years she was registered in Germany on 10/16/2006. There are other similar problems on my tj's years that I have to worry about that I might have?

The OPDA seems to be the biggest issue. Yours is a manual transmission. With the automatics, the PCM (engine and trans brain), seems to be an issue too. Finding replacements for those are hard to find. I would not assume that OPDA is okay. But, take a few pictures of it and post them here. Someone should be able to tell you if it's been replaced. It is that round thing on the right side of the engine, with a black plastic top. If you have any doubts, replace it. It's only about 130-150 euros or so and cheap insurance. The recommended brand is crown but use the original sensor from yours and put it in the new one.

I'm seeing some videos on youtube of the OPDA replacement. In practice, they remove the sensor from the old OPDA leaving it connected to the machine and then reassembling it on the new OPDA once it is fixed on the engine. I see that it is necessary to make the two holes coincide with the appropriate plug that holds the old opda in place before extraction and the new one during insertion. But I will post photos of my current OPDA as soon as possible.

It has quadratec which it also sends to Italy, i tink this is ok for mine tj:

YES!

AND Set the timing on the new OPDA per the FSM rather than the trial and (mostly) error method that some suggest.

What does the abbreviation FSM mean?
How do you set the timming on the new OPDA for the FSM?

Don't worry about any of it.

These problems are in my opinion blown out of proportion (just like everything else) thanks to the internet.

I've owned two 2005 models and never had an issue with either. You only read bad things on the internet, rarely ever do you read good things.

That being said, I honestly wouldn't worry about any of this at all.

Hi Chris, I'm reading a lot of bad things about OPDA, and I'm afraid to break my engine. I have not understood if I will have some notices and be able to replace the piece at the moment, or when there will be noise it will be too late to replace the piece. I'm a little worried about it, but your words help me to be more peaceful.

FSM = Factory Shop Manual.

It's best to replace the OPDA before it shows any problems. By the time problems become apparent, your cam gear could be badly worn. It's not difficult.

-Remove the shipping pin in the new unit.
-Line up the holes in your old unit, stick the shipping pin in.
-Remove old unit (with pin in), it will twist slightly as you pull it out.
-Remember this position.
-Remove pin from old unit and stick it in the new one.
-Line up the new with the same position as the old, just before it came out.
-The new one will twist in the opposite direction as you put it in.
-When it all of the way in, it should be in the same position as your old one.
-Swap over the sensor (camshaft position sensor).
-Enjoy a glass of Chianti or prosecco.
-Done.

This is accurate if and only if the timing happens to be correct before removing the old unit. In this case, OP said he is not getting codes so not a huge risk but not guaranteed to be correct either.

Thanks a lot guys, you are fantastic. I found opda by crown automotive in Spain at a reasonable price. I believe I will take them there in order to avoid customs clearance fees and other charges. At the moment, my OPDA gives no signs of noise. So I'll use my tj again before the new piece arrives. Anyway, in the afternoon I will take pictures of my current opda before proceeding with the purchase.

Good evening everyone, I photographed my OPDA, this is the code I was able to see, is it possible to know if this is part of the defective or has been already replaced?

You also may want to check this thread out that was just posted a moment ago:

05-06 PCM Issue is solved

This has something to do with the OP's OPDA questions?

I didn't watch the video but appears to be all about PCM modules. Appears to be not relevant.

@Angio4x4 Looks like an original OPDA to me. To prevent possible damage to your cam, I would replace the OPDA but use the original sensor.

Hi, I will replace my OPDA with a new crown automotive as recommended above and as visible in the videos, I believe mine has no phase problems because it has never shown any noise or symptom, no lights on. I found this here in eu of the crown and it should be the same as proposed by quadratec:
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/724-...0001&campid=5337789113&icep_item=123543505964
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/724-...0001&campid=5337789113&icep_item=293046139526
I will replace it by keeping my sensor, without disconnecting it from the tj.

He had mentioned "other issues" with 05-06 TJs, so I'm just leaving that there just incase.

Perfect Chris, can I also be involved in the pcm problem on my 6 speed manual tj?
