James & The Sahara Build Thread

Yessir it sure was hard finding a tow package xj lol. With it having 3.73s my tj's Dana 30 axle shafts should swap right over correct? I know the 3.73's have a different carrier. Hoping I don't need to buy new axle shafts right off the bat.

The shafts should swap right over without an issue as long as the shafts are from a 96+ XJ.

Well, there it is Jimbo, answered by the guru himself. Now go grab that HP30!
Gotta get through all those tests tomorrow before I can get the axle. The back of my Jeep is a TJ boneyard right now... lol.

Apparently it's just the older XJs (before 96) where the axle shafts are different. From everything I've read, they say the 96+ XJ Dana 30 shafts will drop right into a TJ Dana 30, regardless of a high pinion or low pinion.
That would make sense. Rock on!

I've been wanting to put high pinion axles in my TJ, but in my case it would be very expensive, because I have a Rubicon. I'd have to get new housings from Currie (or someone) with high pinions on them. As you can imagine, that would be very costly.

Well another update: drove 3 hours one way to check out the hp30. first thing I noticed was it was a lp30, upon further inspection it was tweaked and gear ratio was 3.55. God dang it he had no clue what he had. Still on the hunt.

Wow... This guy must have been a moron. Sorry, but it's true. Pretty easy to tell a LP Dana 30 apart from a HP Dana 30.

I had to show him this lol:

Of everything but the rear of the housing. Should have known lol...

Ahhh! Live and learn, right?

I have no idea why they even made the low pinion axles. Just seems like a stupid waste of metal to me. I mean why not just stick with the high pinions? They were already using them on the earlier XJs.
