Congratulations! The asuto swap is just a little bit of wiring. No big deal at all, You'll be fine.

I mean it can't be any worse than it is now.

Good luck with the project.

I’d rather be doing beadlocks and outboard and midarm, but I gotta get this done. Hoping to recoup some of the expense by selling off all the six speed parts. It sucks bc the tranny is smooth as silk in 1-6. It’s just R. The shift fork and R synchro alone are almost $1000. Plus, I don’t know what else I would find when I got in there.

But, I’ll have an auto, and I think that will contribute to good manners. After this it will be a life Jeep, at least til I can’t get up in it.

I hate wiring. I’m scared to death. You guys who have done the swap are far more mechanically and electrically knowledgeable than me. Thanks for the vote of confidence. 🤣

Start looking at the circuit diagrams now. It takes a bit for them to click, but once they do, you’ll find a whole new level of troubleshooting ability at your finger tips.

Read the first chapter a couple of times, then go look at an easy circuit, like the throttle position sensor.

I think reading about the cruise control circuit is what helped me really start to understand the FSM wiring schematics. It’s not overly complex but there’s enough to it to make you dig and think. A lot of the Magnum V8 threads were really helpful too.

@JMT, here is a video I remember watching multiple times that kind of helped me understand how to trace wiring through harnesses. This guy has a whole series which I love, but I think there’s like four parts to his wiring project.

Here's my list for the NSG-370 to 42rle swap. I've got a few things on the way already, such as the Savvu MUA Auto Transmission Bracket, the shifter Bezel/Indicator, Stalk, and Base Plate. This seems like a big project. Just noticed the OD Switch is not on the list. Of course, there will be other things, like specific bolts and fluids.

Are you adding an aux cooler?

Are you adding an aux cooler?

I’m going to add one. MrBlaine uses the Setrab racing cooler. I don’t think I need that strong a cooler. I can get by with less, so I’m trying to figure that out. Short story, yes.

Did you shifter include the shift cable?

Also, I missed the cable bracket on the transmission. Does your transmission come with that?

No, the shifter did not include the cable. I did source it from the same eBay store though. It’s what I have titled the Shift Interlock Cable.

I need to look at the tranny closer to see if it has the bracket. What’s next is just learning the anatomy of the 42rle so I can be conversant with it. The tranny I’ll be picking up is over in Gig Harbor, WA, about 4 1/2 hours away. I’ll pick it up Nov 9, which gives me time to research so I know what I’m looking at and can pick over what’s there. Thanks for the heads up. Another thing on the list. 🙂

There are two cables. One is the interlock cable, which goes between the shifter and the column and locks the ignition. The other is the actual shift cable, that goes from the shifter to the range selector on the trans.

Just to clarify, there are two shift cables that come off of the shifter. One for the transmission, and one that goes to the key cylinder so the Jeep can’t be shifted without the key and foot on brake/key can’t be removed without being in park. IIRC correctly, a first gen Jeep Liberty interlock cable is the same as the TJ.

Blaine mentioned it on your other thread, but there’s a little ball and detent that gets swapped out under the cylinder as well for said cable. That can also come from a Liberty. That’s where I got mine. I think I sent some extra pieces to Blaine and Mike and they worked.

Is there such a thing as too much cooler?
