Depends how you define struggling.

Offroad, I would prefer it to be lower. But with the auto, all I need to do is power through the brakes when needed.

I daily drive it and go on the freeway. It’ll do 80+, but I prefer to keep it at 65. OD off full-time of course.

Obviously, it’s slow, but not as horrible as I’d thought it would be. And I do drive other vehicles occasionally so I think I have a fair understanding.

Needless to say, when I do regear, I’ll almost certainly be going to 5.89s.

I am referring to offroad of course. But even on highway not being able to use od to me would suck.

If we’re talking offroad, the gearing or lack thereof has not prevented me from making an obstacle, yet. The bigger deal to me is the lack of control, I have to stay on the brakes more than I’d like to.

I don’t see an issue with turning off the OD. Even with the stock size tires, I often found myself turning it off.

Obviously not saying my setup is ideal, just that it’s not as bad as folks make it out to be.

When I bought my tj it had 3.73 on 33s and I hated it. I prefer not to hit obstacles hard. Not enough control.

Geez. I see that. I took pics just in case I might lose my build thread. 🙂 I suspected that would be a hard part to find. I see you’re going through the same swap. Or are you done already?

@Mike_H and @Jamison C, this is the shifter cable I know about.

I’ll have to go back and read Blaine’s comments to see what the other one is.

Best pic I have, but it sucks. Shift cable in the foreground, interlock cable behind

Let me check my parts stash. @Jamison C sent me one of those little cast ignition interlocks, and I got a couple from Daveys when I bought the rest of my stuff. I probably have a spare. If I can get my hands on it, I'll send it out to you.

Proper gearing will change your world.

If you can find a part out, it’s a great way to go. I think I’m only getting four parts, but they’re important: tranny, torque converter, flex plate, and harness. The rest are just pieces. My biggest lack is not having mrblaine. My biggest help is having an 04 and 05 42rle in the driveway. Hope all goes well with yours. I’m excited to see how different my rig is both on and off-road. Thank you for the pic. Now I just have to find those parts.

Auto swaps aren’t too difficult especially with an FSM. The hardest part is just finding the parts and knowing which parts to find.

Yes, we are. The best hands. I saw a guy do an early model manual to 32rh swap, and I was very skeptical he could do it, but it turned out perfect, so I’m hopeful. Didn’t we wheel Top of the World together in 2021?
Memory starting to fade buddy? We sure did lol

Then I’m about done with the hard part! Excited to see how different my Jeep drives. Looking forward to the finesse and control (and having reverse!).

I thought I was done collecting parts two or three times...Once you start trying to put it all together...you'll find out what you need. Your advantage is you have another one to look at.
