Alright guys. Getting ready to start a new project. A rhd 5.9 swap. I have a few things I can’t wrap my head around as of yet..

Backstory.
I have a full running working (daily driver) donor vehicle 1999 Durango slt. With a 5.9

Planning on putting the entire drivetrain minus tcase into my wife 2004 rhd Tj auto

I also have a 1999 donor Tj with a 4.0 man trans

Question is
What harness should I be using primarily the Durango harness and ecu and bringing in the 04 Tj harness for the body control stuff

Use the 99 Tj harness and dodge ecu and splice in the pieces from the dodge harness?

Or just use the 04 Tj harness and splice in the dodge connectors?

Second question. If I’m using the dodge ecu how do I get it to communicate to the Tj body control stuff. Or could someone explain that part of any swap to me. Getting/keeping the “bcm” working getting power ect. That’s the only real thing I can’t wrap my head around.. is the body control portion of a swap

Your setup is slightly different than mine since your TJ is newer, but I'll answer this from my experience with my 97 TJ.

The 04 TJ and 99 Durango use a different BUS setup (one is PCI and the other is CCD). I'm not familiar with exactly what makes them different so I'll let someone else chime in here. You might be able to swap everything electrical from the 99 to the 04.

Both the TJ and the Dodge should have 3 plugs at the ECU - one is the 'body' harness and the other 2 are engine related. When you swap the TJ ECU for the Dodge ECU the body harness won't be changed - it's literally plug and play. All the changes are on the engine harness side. I'd recommend using the Dodge engine/transmission harness as the base. I'll have a good wiring writeup in my thread on the wiring - it's not terribly hard, but it is pretty tedious. My thread will outline all the changes I had to make.

A few words of advice:
  1. Take TONS of pictures of your engine donor and your TJ (looking at wire routing and ground locations). If you have the space keep your donor around as long as possible. You WILL need it for reference.
  2. Keep your nuts and bolts organized.
  3. Depending on when in 99 your Durango was made, it might be wired per the 98 FSM - mine was.
  4. Find PDFs of the service manuals that are searchable with Adobe, etc. I have some if you need them.

WOW these come up every few months. So I'll reply with the required it's ILLEGAL to swap an older engine into a newer vehicle. Doesn't matter what your state does or doesn't do as far as emissions testing. Per the EPA federal law it is illegal. You'd be a lot better off getting a Hemi or LS engine from a 2004 or newer rig.

Since it's a RHD TJ I'm not sure about fitment of the swap. Look thru this thread about issues he's had getting things to fit.

Next is that your Durango PCM will not talk to your TJ's dash as the Durango is a CCD bus and the TJ is a PCI bus.

Or could I get a pcm from a 2003 Durango/ram that is pci?

that chart helped quite a bit! I have a 99 harness and pcm for a Tj and that should work as far as getting everything to communicate no?
If you swapped the gauges and every bit of dash wiring from the 99 to the 04, yes that should solve that issue. The next issue I see is that your 99 TJ has a LHD wiring harness and you're swapping into a RHD so you'd have to rearrange that harness.

You need to use a PCI bus PCM to talk to your dash. You'd want to get the PCM from a 2002 or 2003 Ram truck. The trucks had the least amount of security type stuff where the Durango had more and it causes issues with getting them to run.

Don't worry about the fact that your engine is coming out of a Durango. The engine & PCM doesn't know or care.

From what I know (which isn't a lot) and the people I've spoken with that do this often you're better off to get a wiring harness from a Ram truck as there is less to have to remove compared to your Durango harness. So if you're going to go forward with this swap even though it is not EPA legal then I'd get a engine wiring harness from a 2002-2003 Ram p/u and blend it with your TJ's harness. They stopped offering the magnum engines in the Dodge line up in 2003.

This is still one of the more informative threads on doing a V-8 swap.

I can speak some to this. I used a 99 Durango engine harness, chopped the C105 and C106 plugs off and married those to the C102 and C103 plugs on the TJ - the only thing not needed from the harness is the EVAP Purge Solenoid (carried in the TJ body harness).

The biggest challenge I had was the physical shape of the harness. The TJ's PDC is on the passenger side fender well and the C102 and C103 are near the PDC and center of the TJ respectively. The Durango PDC is on the driver side, C105 is near the engine and C106 is in the PDC. It took some time to de-loom the harness and reconfigure it to the shape I needed. The Ram might have a different shape that would be beneficial.

I can't say 100% since I just used a p/u harness. But the few people I know who do this for a living all say they won't use a Durango harness.
As far as I know the layout of a Ram p/u or Durango or Dakota are all pretty much identical under the hood.

I guess if he wanted to do that work it would be possible to swap the dash and dash wiring into his newer TJ and then use the PCM & wiring harness from the Durango. A lot of work but the same to swap a Hemi into a pre 2001 TJ.

What year Tj we’re you dealing with?

OK!!! Im new here and hopefully not repeating the same questions! I have an 01 TJ, with an 01 ram donor with the 5.9.
Engine is in and put back together but now is the wiring troubles. Im using the dodge harness, but I get a NO BUSS fault and no start yet. We have both TJ and Ram wiring diagrams, but not getting anywhere. Advice, advice, advice. Im sure its something small we are missing, but looking for help!!!

Need MORE information than you've given.

What PCM are you using? How did you blend the wiring? Many times a no bus can be a loose plug to the dash. Or could be one of the three plugs under the dash?

Here are some cheat sheets I've gathered on others who did the swap and blended their wiring.

Using the PCM out of the RAM.
Thanks for this info! I will double check my wires when I get back to it.
I wonder if the PCM isn't the problem now after reading this thread. What PCM will will work the best with my scenario?
We thought this would be easier having the same year Jeep and donor vehicle. But that hasnt been the case. It has still been a fun project though!!
Ant info is appreciated!!
