Colorado Daily-Driven Trail Warrior

Mine was under my hood for a while, but would often overheat and not be able to fill all the tires. I can't fully say it was too hot under normal usage, because within a few months my cats were clogged and had to be replaced. I since got a York, which brings some other considerations (but it's fast as hell and runs off the engine speed).

Which compressor were you running?

Another belt-driven compressor here. Its fast, low maintenance, fairly quiet and takes up no more space than a stock AC compressor!

Mind shooting a photo when you get a chance?

I'm 100% mounting the locker compressor in the factory ABS tray (since I don't have ABS) , but kind of clueless as to where to mount a second compressor.

I know the twin ARB has mounting brackets, but if I can manage to steer away from that $500 compressor, i'd prefer that. :ROFLMAO:

Best I could do the other night

Little update.

Been tracing a weird braking issue the last few days.
Passenger rear tire seems to be locking up randomly.
Sometimes it works well, sometimes it full locks with the slightest pedal pressure.

Took it on a drive today, it decided to spaz and do its thing, and blew out what i'm thinking is the axle bearing retainer when it did.
Almost lost the hub/axle assembly on the road.

Trailered it up, and it's in the shop ready for teardown tomorrow.
Then should be able to see what exactly blew out.
Cant win for losing! :ROFLMAO:

Either way, some fun pics of the day...

Update..
Axle was torn apart today.

Rear Passenger wheel bearing was defective and imploded on itself, and took the outer seals with it.
Only 2 hours of driving time, 84 miles on it, when it blew out. Axle shaft still in great shape.

Must have been a severely defective bearing. Pretty mind-boggling at how fast it blew out.
Just glad it didn't happen on the trail.

All the shrapnel got cleaned from the axle housing, and another set of new bearings/retainers/seals installed.
TJ drove home flawlessly, and is back in the garage now.

Fingers crossed THAT doesn't happen again.

On a plus note, the new gears and ARB Air Lockers are also in.
Taking a day this week to get the Compressor mounted & Installed.

Spent the evening dealing with an exhaust leak I've had since buying the TJ.
I knew it was coming from the downpipe/manifold connection, because of how loose it was during the transmission swap.

I just ignored it until now, because 20 year old exhaust is never fun to work on.

Instead of worrying about stripped bolts/etc , I decided to just go ahead and buy a small dremel tool, and some new bolts.

This was the smallest dremel I could find.
I'm actually super impressed with it. $30 can't beat it!

Took me 4 HOURS to get these bolts cut.
Weird angles, light-duty dremel, not a lot of space to work, poor lighting, you name it.

Bolts cut, brackets dropped.

Didn't take pics of the final product , but replaced all the bolts with some Stainless 3/8 - 16 x 2" Grade 5's.
Torqued to the German "Gudentight" spec, because at this point I couldn't be bothered to crawl out and grab my torque wrench...:ROFLMAO:

I didn't realize how quiet and smooth the 4.0 was SUPPOSED to sound.
I assumed a lot of it was just loud engine noise/lack of sound dampening, because it wasn't a bad leak.
I'm actually mind-blown at how loud the engine/exhaust was before, and how quiet and smooth it sounds now.

She's back sounding smooth, and i'm content for the moment. 🤘

Went and visited RAM Offroad Park here in Colorado Springs today.

I will say, it was a fun trip, although rather quick.
My expectations of what the park was going to be, and what it actually ended up being were two different things.

Online they claim 30+ 4x4 obstacles, and a trail system.
In reality, it's a large 1.5 mile eroded riverbed loop, with random off-shoots going back up to the top.
On-site recovery was a huge plus, as I felt I could push the TJ into some pretty weird spots, without worrying too much.

Spent about an hour playing around, and the new gearing felt PHENOMENAL.
Spent most of the time riding 4Low in 2nd Gear, as 1st gear was just way too low of a crawl gear for 90% of the obstacles.

I've procrastinated my ARB compressor install, and today would have been perfect for it.
Recent Snow & Rain had the bottom of the creek-bed a sloppy mess.
Crossed the riverbed from a 3-4ft drop off into the muddy bottom, and framed my rear bumper out, front tires just 1-wheel peeling.

ZJ Steering Conversion held up well enough for me to throttle up, and wiggle myself out.
Although I will say, I was a bit hesitant on it, and it didn't like what I was doing.
The entire time, all I could think about was "If this was the Currie Steering, I could move the whole jeep around the hung wheel" :ROFLMAO:

So, correctlync coming soon?

Overall, it was a fun hour or two trip, and something I'd probably do again with a group.

As much as I've done to this TJ and Surprisingly this build thread might come to an end...

When I was initially purchasing a TJ, there were a few things I wanted, but couldn't find on a solid clean TJ in a good price range.
I originally took interest in the LJ platform, but knew the pricing was out of the realm of what I was willing to spend for a 20 year old vehicle.

For a TJ there were a few things I knew I REALLY wanted.
Hard Top (w/ Soft Top was a plus), Full-Doors, and bone stock.
Needless to say, I couldn't ever find a combination of those.

I wanted something that I could build how I wanted to, without previous owner hack-jobs to fix.

Today that all changed, when I stumbled across THIS 2006 LJ on Facebook Marketplace in my town for ONLY $5,500!

I saw it within 30 minutes of it being listed for sale, so I impulsively sent a message.
I knew it was a long-shot. The price was absolutely PHENOMENAL. Unheard of you could even say.

Turns out, I was already the 4th person in-line to see it. First few people flaked out, and finally I get a message from the seller saying:
"the first few people bailed out. If you're interested, it's still available".

I've never been so excited to buy a vehicle in my life.

I drove 20 minutes to the sellers house, and there it sat.

2006 LJ. Flame Red. 4.0. Manual 6-Speed Transmission.
Hard Top AND Factory Soft Top STILL IN THE BOX.
BUT, it has 200,000 miles. Which immediately stung me in a bad spot.
I decided to dig/question deeper into the mileage, because it truly worried me a bit.

To my surprise, the seller was the ORIGINAL OWNER and bought the Jeep in 2006.
He was an older gentleman, who was extremely meticulous about maintenance.
Has every service record since 2006, and never allowed even a spot of fluid to drip on the garage floor.
(seriously, he replaced the windshield wiper fluid tank because he felt it was "too dirty to sell that way")

The jeep was flat-towed for a portion of it's life behind an RV. (which could explain at least SOME of the mileage)
but the frame is absolutely phenomenal. The engine sounded like it just came off the showroom floor. and everything else about the Jeep was just so obviously maintained to a pristine degree.

Not only is it the absolute cleanest TJ i've ever seen in person, but also the cleanest LJ i've seen in person.
To top it off, it's the best price I've ever seen.

Long story short, I now own an LJ.
It's in my garage as we speak, and I paid $5,500 for it.

I am absolutely over the fucking moon with excitement.
I plan to make another build thread for it, as soon as I figure out what I'm doing with my TJ.
