Clever shock extension

The goal was to even out the shock travel without buying new shocks. It's an early experiment that worked for those particular shocks and that particular spring lift. The education was good and helped years later when building shock mounts.
 
Since it’s mentioned sometimes splitting the extensions to the top and bottom for the front, I just want to know what is the max spacer thickness can go on the top of the jounce cup without getting caught in the springs during the bump? Can 3/4” or 1” spacer be added safely to the top?

IIRC, at one time I had 2 inches on top.
One of them was rubbing slightly, so I ground down the outer edge of the cup.

Is it necessary to have the bump stops prevent coil bind?
Assuming there are no other clearance issues.

If the shocks are allowing for coil bind to occur, you either have unusually short shocks or you have Metalcloak coils.
 
In my case it’s more of a preventative measures to eliminate any chances of bottoming out shocks. There is a very small difference in collapsed lengths between stock shocks and Bilstein 5100 (0”-2”). Everything else is stock in suspension and tyres would be 30” or 31” so shouldn’t be any clearance issues otherwise.

I drive mostly on the streets and very occasionally on gravel roads to get to camping sites etc.

All you need to do is cycle the axle without springs installed. Bring the axle up to full shock compression and extend the bunp stops to match.

Yes, but unfortunately I am not equiped enough to do it myself and mechanic shops almost charge an arm and a leg per hour around where I am. Besides they have their own calculations and assumptions (which is way out of the line almost every time) on how much they will charge to do the job 🧐. Well that’s New Zealand, what all I can say 🤣
