Tell me about it. Americans have become a bunch of wimps. I'm still not convinced airbags do much if one is actually wearing their seatbelt, and they do have some negatives. To listen to the "SafetyCrats", I don't know how I survived childhood!
I still have one car that doesn't have an exploding dashboard or exploding steering wheel. I'm hardly concerned. Prudence is one thing, living in a padded bubble is yet another. What's next? A flu-like bug with a 99% survival rate that forces everyone to wear masks that don't do anything?
I for one am SICK of the cradle-to-grave Nanny State.

And here I've been thinking about removing my air bags becaue I want to change the steering wheel. And use that space in the dash on the passenger side for something other than a air bag.
But I grew up riding in the back of pickups and vehicles with ONLY a lap belt. I guess it just depends on what you want and how you plan to get there. While I like the idea and think it matches their center console well it isn't something I'd do. I don't hate the stock dash enough to want to remove it yet.

Hell, I remember as a kid one time sitting on very back edge of a stepside pickup bed, going 55MPH down the road to the dump. I was basically a "living tailgate" as the truck didn't have one. Was it the smartest thing to do? Nope, but it worked - and more importantly - IT WAS MY BUSINESS! Fast forward to when a cop tried to pull me over for having my daughter in the bed of a pickup - in the front of the bed WITH a tailgate. I was fortunately able to ditch him. Cradle to grave, cradle to grave...
Maybe, but copious amounts of alcohol lowers most peoples standards low enough that even I look good

Yep I had an MP stop me on base once for letting my son ride in the bed of my truck. Him & I went round & round until I told him to call his supervisor down there. There weren't any rules at the time about having kids in the bed of a truck this guy was just one of those Karen's that has ruined our country. Speed limit on base was 15 MPH so it wasn't like I was going to be going 45-55 MPH.
I am not a cat lover either, more of a dog kinda guy. LOL

While I tend to align wjth your views and am anti-Karen. It’s usually not you, the driver, that’s a concern, it’s some dumb idiot running a red light or something that with everyones thinking, “wont happen to me.”

I agree it a lot of times isn't YOUR own fault when something BAD happens. And I'd say the arguement is that there are more vehicles on the roads now than there were in 196?? which is true. But I choose to try not to go thru life worrying about all the "What If's".
I could drive myself crazy doing the what if game if I let myself. And yes that doesn't mean that I don't try to protect myself as much as possible. So I do try to think safety but also try not to overdo it with worry. I still let my kid ride in the bed of my truck when I was taking her up the road to go swimming. But it's like 2 miles max.
If my TJ was my daily driver I wouldn't be thinking about removing air bags but since it's 90% trail rig I don't worry about it as much. I survived riding in CJ's and YJ's with no air bags so I figure I can in a TJ also.
To the best of my knowledge, there were no rules/laws against pickup bed riding when the cop came after me. But he had to turn around, and by then I managed to make a couple of quick turns into a back alley. Probably a "Karen" as well...
