I literally just pop the hood open, spray simple green as others have mentioned and i've seen it recommended multiple times on this forum, I agitate with a small detailing brush I have, let it sit and spray water with a low pressure. I don't bag or cover anything at all. No problems from it.
How do you clean your engine bay after off-roading?

I'm getting ready for a big build.
50" light bar, angry birds grill, farm jack on my hood, 35" tires on my 2" lifted jeep, oh yeah, snorkel for the clean engine feeling.

I clean mine maybe 2 or 3 times a year, definitely not after every off road trip lol, I don't even wash it half the time.
I just go to the drive in coin op (which isn't coins anymore, credit card now so they can suck more money)... then spray the engine degreaser around... let sit a few then spray it off... I don't use the high pressure spray though, just the bit that still comes through when you don't pull the trigger so to speak
It's a Jeep that spends more time off road than on... for me that means it doesn't have to be spotless (or even close).

Works every time. Take some of his methods to the extreme you want. I use most of the methods he recommends.

I’m pretty OCD about my engine bay and yours is not that bad... Gunk foaming spray can, use the whole can and I use a wheel brush, the kind that looks like a big pinecone and can get in every crevice. Rinse with a garden hose, spray nozzle is fine but negative on the pressure washer! With only the pressure of a hose I have never worried about and never had a single problem with not covering anything but I dont directly spray the alternator or the PCM. After the first major cleaning, I spray a little wheel cleaner on my wheel brush and go at it lightly every time I wash the car. The first time you will get it about 80% clean. Next time 90% and so on.

If we can get a pic of his teeth, we’ll be able to give a good estimate.
I cover the battery, spray with diluted simple green, let sit, use a spray washer in quite a few places, then scrub here and there and rinse off. It turns out pretty decent. It looks better now that I painted the intake tube (not done yet in this photo).
Probably the only valid reason (outside of OCD) to wash your engine is to remove caked on oil and dirt that affects engine cooling.
