Midnight LJR Build

I got the rack all tacked together today. I was originally only going to do the center square section. However since I had to change the plan for where to put the actuators in the back because of clearance for the tail lights. I decided to widen the rack. I designed it so the round tube in the sides will stick out just about 1” around the base of the tent. This should help protect it from thick branches a bit. This wider rack will also give me a nice place to mount the 270 awning the wife wants so it should work out. I have been considering removing the center support I think I may have overbuilt it. It’s thin tubing though so doesn’t add a lot of weight so will likely just leave it.

I used round tubing everywhere you will be able to see it, and square in the center because of the brackets that came with the tent. It also made that section faster to construct which was a nice bonus.

I might just need to build a trailer....

Ok, I moved two of the cross bars so they line up with the new side sections because it was bothering me. I also built the new removable kayak rack. Other than that the linear actuary came in and I will be thinking about exactly how I am gonna make the brackets for those while working on the rock sliders next.

Maybe @DrDmoney will go to your house so you can use his drone. That way you don't need to stand on a ladder to take photos.

The trailer is looking amazing. If California never lets you reopen you may have a shot at building custom trailers and performing outboards for the jeep community.

I really like the elegance of your stanchions for supporting the rack. So much so, I'm scrapping my clumsy box ones for something similar, cept I'll use 3" C channel for the stanchions I think. I won't be supporting a RTT, but want options for a cargo rack or kayak holder. I also like your use of the tubing, vs. box. Flows much better with the trailer. Did you use 1.5" tube?

Thanks, so far I am happy with how they turned out. Yes 1.5” tubing to match the winch guard on the front bumper of the Jeep.

I am sure 3” channel would work well I was going to use channel originally but local place didn’t have any.

I'll need to find someone locally to bend some tube for me. Or, maybe a road trip to Mike's fab shop, lol!

Your welcome by anytime.

I have a 1.5” and 1.75” die. If you want do 1.75” I just need to order a quick replacement part.

I just bent all these up today to get ready to add the sliders to the trailer next.

1.5" should work fine for what I have in mind. What thickness? 1/8" wall? Don't want more than 200lbs. hanging up high, cargo wise.

I used .83 for the rack and think it’s over build I will be using .120 for the sliders.

I did use .120 for the verticals on the rack.

.120 wall would be plenty for mine. It'll be just 2 bars going front to back, with 2 cross bars connecting the mess together. The cross bars will either hold kayak runners, or a cheap HF cargo rack for additional cargo, if needed. I like being able to remove the rack if I don't need the additional storage.

Long day: I got the rock sliders finished today. I also completed all the welding on the trailer and rack.

Here is a photo of the rack in the up position.

Rough to do list.
-Modify rubicon flares and test fit.
-Weld on the brackets and test the linear actuators.
-Complete all wiring of lights etc.
-Finish making and installing a couple small gussets for the rack
-Install Bump Stops
-Add Brackets for corner stabilizers.
-Paint/Powder Coat/Line-X

Only down side of today was after finish welding the rack it warped just enough to make make it so I don’t have enough tolerance for it to slide easily. So I will be remaking them, they are currently 1.5” tube, I am going to make them out of 1.25”. That should give me more slop and allow it to function easier. I am glad I made them bolt on just in case this happened. I will also be lowering the verticals a bit when I do that since they don’t need to go all the way up. As long as the rack has some overlap on the verticals it should be fine.

Wrapping up lots of loose ends the last couple days, the goal is to take the frame into the powder coat place tomorrow afternoon. Just have a few misc holes to drill and some tubes to cap off. Plus tearing it all apart and bring them just the pieces to powder coat.

New in these pictures is the attachments for the crank down stabilizers. Added some gussets to the rack. Change out the vertical tubing from 1.5” to 1.375” the rack slides much easier now, I also shortened them about 10” so the kayak rack is lower. I made all the brackets for linear actuators, and came up with a way to attach them together. The last thing I finished was a simple frame for the tongue box.

Getting closer...

The 6Pak actuators are awesome. I can't wait to see them in action.
