What was your first Jeep?

Never owned a Jeep til now

Technically its not mine, its my 9 year olds, but I will be rebuilding it and driving it for 7 years as a spare toy 🤣

My parents bought twin silver Suzuki Samurais NEW in …88?? Then I bought a low mileage 90s Isuzu Amigo in the 90s and beat that thing silly. Couldnt afford a Jeep back then

Red 1998 Cherokee Sport

My older brother basically got it free after helping a guy move because it didn't run right. Turned out it needed a harmonic balancer and $68 later he drove it like 300 miles without an issue. I was 15 and loved it so he gave it to me. Unfortunately, I only got to drive it for a month or two before I got caught in the middle of a 4 car wreck and it was totalled. But that started an itch that is only now starting to get scratched, 16 years later!

I bought a brand new 90' Amigo and had an 88' Samurai. Anyone that complains about the ride and road noise with a TJ, needs to drive a Samurai on long trips. I drove mine 3 hours daily on the highway and had to sell it after a year. It drove me crazy. 😬

1980 Golden Hawk 304 V8...I was living in the northern Rockies at the time, so this Jeep did a lot of mountain climbing and off-road adventures! Only had it for 3 years...needed more hauling space, so purchased the new (at the time) 1986 Comanche with the much maligned GM 2.8L V6 engine. Had even more fun with that Jeep and drove it nearly 300,000 miles until 1997. Waited nearly 18 years before buying my current 2004 TJ owning mostly Subarus in between and still today.

You can tell by the Jeeps posted, who the old bastards are! Mine was a 1991 YJ with the Islander package. Bought it used in 1995. After a few years started modding it after I hooked up with a Jeep club. Peer pressure there! In no certain order, buddy and I shortened a Ford HP Dana 44 to fit waggy shafts, with a Detroit locker and Parts Mike hi-clearance steering arms. Shortened a Ford rear 9” on the long side, put in chrome moly shafts, a Detroit locker, and welded up a ladder bar. Spring over setup. Installed a 1988 mustang 5.0L HO in front of a T-18 transmission, again using Parts Mike’s Jeep adapter kit replacing the shaft. That was a bitch. I did three more of those for friends. After wheeling in South Dakota and restarting the Jeep 1700 times, went with a Ford automatic. Also had a friend weld up a custom exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler. Jeep sounded great. Also in time, added an Atlas II transfer case, as the axles only had 4.10 gears.

In 1976 I purchased a used 1975 CJ 5, it was a 258 6 cyl with a 3 speed trans and a Dana 20 T/C. I was living high on the hog for a 16 year old, top speed was about 80 mph. I kept it until I got a brand new CJ 5 in 1980. The 76 was a lot tougher than the 80.

My first Jeep was a '64 Wagoneer with a 230 tornado, 4.10 in both front and rear D44s, 3sp on the floor with a D20 x-fer case. That Jeep was geared so low it'd climb a tree. Driving it around town, I'd just leave it in 3rd and start/stop with the clutch. The only optional equipment it had, was reverse lights... it didn't even have the seatbelt option, although it did have the eye bolts to attach them if wanted...

My very first one really doesn't count. It was 'in the late '70s and a 73 CJ5 Renegade, 304, someone put a Holley 4 barrel on and did a poor job of it. I bought it cheap as the owner thought the engine was bad, fixed it up pretty cheap. The PO saw me driving it around and offered $500 more than I had in it. Sold it on the spot. Didn't have it but a few weeks.

Then next one is the one I've always considered as my real first Jeep. In early 81, I bought a new 1980 CJ5 from the dealer in Texarkana. GM 4 banger, 2 barrel carb, 4 speed and highway gears. Teal blue with blue denim seats and soft top. It was my daily driver for several years. Named it "Bessie" and I drove it every and anywhere, on and off road. Went back in the Navy, used it to pull a U-Haul box trailer from Texarkana to Pensacola which it did with no problems. Eventually, my then wife talked me into trading it in on a new F-150 Supercab pickup. I was regretting it the next day and ever since. I still miss that little Jeep.

Always wanted another Jeep, but didn't get one until I got Ol' Blue, my LJ in '18. It's a keeper and if my current wife says it's got to go, she better get rid of her van first.

Notice us ol' geezers still drive TJs or LJs. We been around long enough to know a good thing when we see it.

In 1979 my buddy drove to my house with his father's new CJ7 in brown. I can still see it in my mind. I wanted a Jeep back then so bad but life got in the way and I was into Camaros (1968) and then got hooked into the Van scene.

Fast forward to 1999 and I purchased a 1989 YJ with the 4.2 and the Peugeot BA10 transmission. I loved that thing but soon realized it was going to cost too much to do what I wanted to do with it. I sold it and then purchased my 1998 TJ that I have now.

The disease has also spread to my kids as they both have TJs as well. My son bought his 2003 in 2014 with his own money in his Junior year in High School and my daughter bought a 1999 that since was totaled and then bought her 2004 in 2019. We're all wondering when mom is going to get on board. LOL.

1978 CJ5 - straight six with three speed transmission. Lot of fun. Towed my 78 MGB from TN to TX when I graduated college. Started raining as soon as I crossed the city line and did not stop raining until I entered San Antonio. Damn long drive. Spent a week fixing some minor leaks, and then drove it to San Diego to pick up a girl I had met while studying in Mexico. Her parents thought I was crazy. I drove her from San Diego to Sonoma State University. We drove it all over North California and then I went back south to LA. Hung out for a week and then drove back to SA when I ran out of money. Epic trip. I did not have a top on it the whole time. Sold it when our son was born. I was trying to be a responsible adult.

It was a long time before I was able to get another Jeep. That was a 1990 Grand Wagoneer. Wheeled it and drove it as a daily driver for about ten years. In there I bought my first ever new vehicle, a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. That was an incredible vehicle. 420 ft lbs of torque. 330 hp under the right foot. Quadra-Drive II did not allow for any wheel spin. Also during that time my wife bought the 2004 TJ Columbia Edition. I tried to get her to buy a Rubicon, but she liked the colors of the Columbia Edition. Yes, I had three cool Jeeps in the driveway for a while.

Next was the 2013 JKU purchased brand new.

Now we are down to the TJ and her 2022 JLU Rubicon.
