Steering wheel upgrade?

Anyone know if you can swap out other steering wheels from other model jeeps into a TJ? Did they use the same airbag plugs for other Jeeps?
I saw a video on YouTube by Project TJ - Ep.28 Darryl Sheather replaced his steering wheel with one from a Cherokee WJ.

Well the guy in Poland came through. I sent him a message saying I wanted a wheel with black leather and orange stitching. He said no problem, PayPal him $265. A week later this showed up. The craftsmanship is spot on, the stitching looks better than most new cars. This is a very nice wheel!.

Be prepared to send $265 into oblivion with little to no communication. He did send me a message saying it was shipped with a tracking number. He obviously wanted to avoid giving money to eBay and had me PayPal him direct.

I guess you could keep things on eBay if you don't like taking risks. Yolo.

That's stitching is beautiful

Thanks for reminding me. I'd been looking for black with white stitching. Just bought one on eBay...

Has anyone else had issues with a WJ steering wheel? I received mine today from aacaraa and it did not fit/function properly. When I went for a drive, the steering felt tight. I also entirely lost return-to-center. I could turn the wheel, take my hands off and drive in a circle.
If you overtighten the bolt it will cause the steering wheel to bind. Loosen the bolt, pop the steering wheel loose from the column and then retorque it to 40 ftlbs.

I wondered if I had over-tightened but I torqued to 40 ft/lbs on install. After the test drive I removed it and compared it to the original, installed it again and the same thing happened. I put the original back on and had no issues.

Can you see where the wj wheel is rubbing? Maybe a Dremel and some fine tuning.

I couldn’t see anything rubbing but could hear it while turning. Considering that it’s a refurbished steering wheel, it’s possible that it’s been damaged and it’s sliding too far onto the splined shaft. I’ll probably take a look again this weekend.

That’s odd because the 2003-06 TJ uses the same steering wheel as the WJ. The Steering wheel on my TJ is from a 2003 WJ Overland. When I first put it on, I had an issue with it rubbing/dragging. I loosened it back up and the problem went away.

Did you ever fix this issue? I’d like to throw a a eBay steering wheel in from the Polish dude if their won’t be fitment or functional issues.

Also, do you happen to know if those controls on the back be made to adjust the volume on aftermarket stereos?

How difficult is it to remove and replace the steering wheel on an 03-06? For some reason I have it in my head that this job is difficult getting the clock spring, airbag, and wheel dialed in.

Not hard, pull the screws on the back of the airbag, center the wheel and lock the steering, unhook the wires, remove the center nut and remove the wheel with a puller. Reinstall in reverse order. Take it off centered, put it back in centered.

Thanks man this is helpful. I previously thought I’d need to remove the clock spring to do this.
