P0344/P0340 - Live data in spec, still rough idle / loss of power

It's a filter cap. You can just unplug to see if it makes a difference.

Did you download the FSM?

Didnt make a difference. Yes I have the FSM.

At this rate I think I need to swap out the CPS and Crank sensor. Those are the two things that can cause this ASD shutoff (outside of PCM failure)

Okay so im back with a lot more info and even more headaches.

Seemingly got the whole shutdown thing to stop happening, not not positive.

First I noticed my crank sensor has a different plug spliced into the factory harness (I've owned the jeep for 2+ years — unraveling all PO's shoddy work) and the splices were simply twisted and taped lmao. They were spiking to like 50 ohms each when I moved them. So I fixed all 3 splices and fired her up, also replaced whole ground lead from battery to block/firewall. Also rotated OPDA to get it within .5 degrees (was at 3.5). Still has a tractor/bouncy idle, and no power. If I were to try and accelerate above 2k RPM it would bog down and feel like it was running on 4 cylinders.

So i thought my Cats were clogged... nope. Did back pressure test on both mini cats. around 1PSI even when giving throttle. Crossed that off the list. Pulled the coil rail and plugs. Plug #3 was darker then the rest (changed them 2 months ago) and smelt like raw fuel. So I ordered a coil rail as mine in the original. That comes in tomorrow. In the meantime I checked continuity to injector #3, since the plug was dirty and originally I got a Coil C code (P2308) when this event first started. The control wire also would Ohm to 50 when moving main harness. Ran a new wire from correct PCM pin (c2-12) to Injector #3 control. Started her up. still tractor idle. P0344 came back, and now it surges when driving and trying to accel past 2000prm.

Any thoughts? Im getting thrown in circles here.

3 and 4 fire at the same time, from the same coil.

Yes, and only plug 3 was darker and smelled of gas. 4 seemed perfectly fine. Coil is original and possibly internally failing?

Same circuit for both. Both fire every time they are at TDC. One on compression, one on exh.

More likely fuel injector. Check the injectors resistance. They should all be 12 to 15 ohms or so.

Okay just checked resitence on each injector. They all came in at 12.3.

I still think/hope it could be the coil. When I changed the plugs 2 months ago they had massive gaps (picture below, and yes i fixed the valve cover gasket) actually surprised it was running well when I changed them. Thay puts a ton of strain on those coils. Its a original rail with 157k on it.

It also just went back into shut down mode. No crank, dash lights up etc. Something very weird is going on. Not sure if PCM, or still wiring to Crank/Cam telling PCM to not turn on. But why does it keep happening only when I remove negative leads off battery for a period of time?? But then if I bridge the ASD relay, turn the key on or run it, then turn off, replace relay, it then is out of shut down mode..wtf

HOPEFULLY FINAL UPDATE:

Threw in new NGK Coil Rail...

Runs better than the day I got her. No more tractor idle, now more surging, and not a single CEL returned. Drove it 5 miles to get gas. Crazy a bad coil could create all this, but happy it was as simple as that.

New coil rail also ended up being my fix for a major cylinder 3 misfire and what seemed like clogged cats. Took 4 months of diagnosing, coil rail testing good 2 or 3 times, a compression test, fuel pressure test, and lots of other various straw grabbing before I just caved and bought a coil rail off amazon (so I could return it if it wasn't the fix I needed) just to try it. Lo and behold, trouble free driving ever since.

Yeah I did so much digging and fixing other thing that were still issues, but not THE issue. Found iffy wire on cam sensor 5v supply, found failing wire on 12v to coil, found spliced in (poorly) new connector to crank sensor. Found failing wire from injector #3 control. Repalced all that to no avail. Went with the more expensive NGK coil rail.. and boom, that was it.

But glad I went down a bit of a rabbit hole and fixed those issues, as they for sure would have popped up sooner rather than later and would have been an issue in the future.

Oddly enough, outside of the initial event and limp mode, the PCM didnt throw or record a single missfire even though it was running like a John Deere tractor lmao
