JK to TJ axle swap

The LJ project has reach the axle swap. While Tons is what everyone will think I decide that JKR Dana 44 will be better option for clearance.

Do anyone here does this swap before?

To the OEM style arms?

To other CA set up?

Brake set up?

If I was going to upgrade axles, I would no doubt get a set or JK D44s. There’s a lot of people around here who have done them, and as I understand it’s a lot cheaper than some of the other options. With 35s, my stock D44s are fine, but if I had an LJ with 37s, I think I would take this route.
 
When you get started give us a thread! I kinda want to do this too...but probably won't. I'll live vicariously through you though!

I will think on start the tread but my major issue is to keep it updated. Working on the Jeep and traveling around the Globe does not let me much time to write as I do want.

The time to use this axles is now. This axles have been selled cheap on FB Market, JK or JKR, housings or complete. Few companies make swap to OEM brackets which simplify things. If 3 and 4 link is the plans, options are out there just little more work and cash involved.

It is lots cheaper and less abusive to your Jeep as the weight is lot less as well. I'm looking more on the clearance side. If you compare the clearance of a GM 14 bolts in 40" tires vs the JKR Dana 44 you will understand my point.

My goal move to 40" tires as the 37" tires are the new 35" on my area. so to have the clearance I do really need i have to do tons plus 42' tires plus a supercharge for the motor and the stretch that I'm avoiding to do as much I do can.

Yep, I see what you're saying. And with some JK Dana 44 axles and alloy axle shafts, you should be able to run 40s without issue I believe!

No doubt this Dana 44 axles are the most Dana 44 strong version and when reinforced they are solid solid.

I do know couples of LJ that successful run them with 40's, I mean wheel it hard. Hope I can accomplish same results.

There's a guy up here who has the JK Dana 44 axles on his TJ with 37s. They look beefy as hell, and from talking to him, he got them for a pretty good price, since they made so many JKs that it's not hard to find parts for them!

I don't know that it's cheaper per say than tons to do from scratch. The big difference is you can probably find a set of JK 44s that already have some good aftermarket parts in em where as built tons almost never go on sale. If you keep an eye out you can even trip over aftermarket 44s like i did with my front Pro Rock 44 and they tend not to have too much of a premium attached to them.

I have indeed done the swap, I used a JKR rear and a JK prorock 44 front. If you are thinking about a long arm that replaces factory brackets like in a 3 link/4link kit, now is the time as none of the JK brackets are in the right spot for TJ use. One of the shops around here thought they were going to be able to use a TJ rock crawler kit to do the swap for someone and reuse the JK bracket. Turns out they have to cut everything off and start fresh after all. They ended up using a TJ axle swap bracket kit on it.

For mine I used the TMR Customs 3link/4link kit with metal cloak 3.5" springs and bilstine shocks. Generally I've been happy with it but there are a few changes I'd like to make. I didn't cut the trusses down as far as I could have and now have very little up travel because of it. On the other hand running an 11.6" shock up front with only 3" max of up travel means she flexes like a monster ;)

Id recommended getting the axles in the truck, finding your max up travel point and your desired max down travel point, then buy shocks that fit the bill as closely as possible. That way you can still fine tune thinks with where you weld on the shock mounts.

Brakes are no big deal, JK, TJ, and YJ flex hoses are the same, the only difference is the lengths. And the JK has 4 instead of 3, for mine I ran the tj rear flex hose to the axle, took the TJ junction block that usually attaches to the breather barb. Welded a bolt to the axle tube to hold it and bent up custom lines, then used JK rear flex hoses to go from the hard lines to the caliper. They have a small metal tab on em that I bolted to the edge of the spring bucket to keep everything in place. However when I damaged one and couldn't find a replacement right away I used an aftermarket SS front hose from a JK and a clamp to hold it in place. What I'm getting at is your opinions are endless. I also have a road race Motorsports front big rotor kit to give me a bit more stopping power, teraflex has a nice one available as well.

Drive shafts I went full custom 1350 joints with new yokes for both tcase outputs and both pinions.

Sway bars, due to my suspension design, no factory sway bar fit, so I went antirock in the rear and swayloc in the front. I still had to modify one of the swayloc arms to clear my offset trackbar mount where as currie has prebent arms available.

Steering is a totally different animal and you will have to do a custom axle and probably also frame side track bar mount to get all the geometry correct. For me I have an extra couple of inches in length from the frame side mount and the axle side goes past the spring and almost touches the inner C on the passanger side. That length is important to not having horrendous bump steer as I tried to cheat the first time and get the angle correct but not cross over the front of the spring. As a result my drag link does need a slight bend to clear the TB bolt.

It's by no means a bolt in swap, don't think for a moment because it came from a jeep it'll be less work that tons from a Ford. But it does work well and I do wheel it constantly without brakeage. I do go through a lot of wheel bearings for some reason though.

Thanks for the details. Very appreciated and will be listened for sure.
I do clearly understand this is not a bolt in swap. Especially when I'm will be doing the 3 and 4 link swap at the same time. With that decided help me out to move into the axle brackets to be used.

Steering will be my major obstacle but gathering info so I can make the best decisions and less rework possible.

Thanks for add the breaks details, I have been looking on what is best for this set up and is many options.

I does not let bounce my current Dana 30/Dana 44 set up either, may be my secret as well. ;)

How those Rancho High Steer knuckles has been holding up?
 
The TMR 3link /4link kit made some choices easy for me, it came with the TB and control arm brackets I needed. The JK steering is setup similar to a WJ so you have full crossover steering. I suppose you could still use a Y link but why bother when you have a superior opinion available. Just do your high steer from the get go to make life easier. (provided you have the lift for it, I assume with a 40" plan you will.) I didn't use any fancy suspension geometry calculator I used the supplied brackets, up the uppers in the middle hole and attached the lower brackets so the bolt hole was just below the axle center line and the bottom of the bracket was just below the axle tube. Seems to work well on my LJ.

The knuckles are solid, they seem to be a direct knock off of the Reid ones.

I have been looking into the Reid but also Teraflex makes some too. It is a set of this Rancho on my local FB Market that's why I do ask.

I went with Rancho over teraflex due to the fact that they are a copy of Reid, are cheaper than teraflex and give 1/4“ or so more tie rod clearance. Because 1/4" will make all the difference ;)
