MORryde vs Exogate

If your driving is mostly on the road and dirt roads, you might get away with stock hinges and carrier, provided you make the appropriate adjustments to the 5 rubber bumpers that sit between the tire and the gate, and especially the one below the gate on the tub. Rocky stuff that bumps around a lot...that may still not be enough long term.

They sell the hinges separately, but the gate can crack too, and the hinges don't help the gate.

I'm not aware that the reinforcement bracket is available without the full kit.

One thing I noticed from my old swing away carrier breaking itself apart from vibration is that my Jeep spends most of it's driving time on pavement. I'm not convinced that the accumulated wear and tear is mostly the result of the off road time.

Anything more than the OEM spare is too heavy for the gate and cheap hinges. I suggest a complete set up and at a minimum the top snubbers and the one below the gate spaced out to contact the tire. Over time even the OEM spare will cause the cheap factory hinges to sag.

Finally!
This was single handedly the biggest PITA, MF'ing frustrating thing to install.
I wound up having to remove my tailgate and drill out the bolts that where seized in the aluminum hinges. Once they were drilled out the bolt studs just screwed right out with ease. I used heat on all bolts, but the hinge bolts just wouldn't budge. Done and done and very happy.

Just stumbled upon this thread. I love mine. I was an early adopter as you can see that my tub reinforcing plate is the old style. Kudos to Jeff for designing such a great product.
Pic is from 2012 and still has my old bumper.

You definitely were an early adopter! Thanks for the nice words :).

The other day I was looking for something in my workshop storage room and I came across the original Exogate prototype, which I built in January 2011. This photo shows the original frame, the original hinges and the original roll bar tie-in bracket, all of which were made in my home workshop. Above the prototype hinges are a pair of the first production hinges and above the frame is a pair of preproduction v2 "wide-swing" hinges MORryde sent me to verify before they went into production.

My current Exogate is a hybrid of v1, v2 and prototype parts. I've got a v1 main frame and v2 wide swing hinges; the hinges are supported by v1 spacer blocks and a v2 tub reinforcement plate. The Rotopax carrier is a production unit and the CB antenna mount is a homemade prototype. Also visible in this photo is a spare tire stud for the jerry can/ammo can carrier, this is the latest version from MORryde which actually isn't really compatible with the TJ spare carrier - they sent it to me a month of so ago so I could advise them on how to change it to be compatible.

One more prototype accessory can just be seen in this next photo, between the tire and the tailgate one of the receivers for the Exogate Cargo System prototype is visible (there are two receivers, the second one isn't visible in this photo). I posted about that prototype in another thread.

I am continuing to design and develop accessories for the Exogate although I don't know if any of them will ever see production.

Looks good, but I don't think I'll be needing a new one anytime soon. 😁 Seems to be holding up just fine. Here is a more recent picture with my current bumper and 33x10.5's.

It's not often you get to speak to the designer of a product, what a beefy piece of great ingenuity! I love my (your) tire carrier.

So I'll be getting an Exogate hopefully before the end of the year. Awesome to have the designer here in this forum, and a fellow upstate NY-er. I'm originally from Salamanca about 100 miles west on 86.

Thanks, but I'm just a Jeep guy like most of you; I had an idea for an improvement for my Jeep so I built it in my home workshop. It turned out that a company liked it and it's been a product ever since, now there are lots of them on Jeeps.

Nine years later I'm still building accessories for mine - recently I posted photos of a prototype Exogate cargo system in another thread here and I'm now in the process of doing a prop which will hold the tailgate open on unlevel ground - it's an idea that someone in this forum suggested.

I'll wave at Salamanca the next time I go past on my way to visit MORryde or heading to Colorado or Utah for some trail time. Those are pretty much the only times I go past Salamanca :).

Just read this entire thread, pretty much set on getting one of these. Two issues I expect to have with the nstall:

  • I have round LED taillights, will need to either make a spacer for the passenger side or trim out the hinge supporting plate. Not sure how much trimming it would be, if I went this route, I don't expect that it would adversely affect the strength, correct?
  • I have corner armor, this will obviously push the bracket out from the tub a small amount. Would you recommend cutting the armor to bring it to the tub, or put a spacer between the Reinforcement plate and the tailgate?
Question for the designer, jscherb. I appreciate how you reinforced the upper hinge, curious why you didn't attempt to reinforce the lower hinge as well?

This has been a very informative thread.

@jscherb designs some great stuff but the manufacturers sometimes alter his designs.

I didn't think the lower hinge needed reinforcement but would love to hear from Jeff.

If you have corner armor you can ditch the reinforcement plate. They are the same thing.

Does your corner armor have cutouts for the hinges?

Check out the way @mrblaine did it on @midnightljr's build. As a quick summerization he used the upper reinforcement and since the armor didn't have the hinges cutout he used the armor as the "backing plate".

In some cases I would agree with you, but depending on the corner armor which could range from plastic to to pretty thick steel, this may or may not be true. I have fairly thin aluminum corner armor and it would not serve well as a replacement for the bracket.

I guess in that case I wouldn't call it corner armor then.

How thin are we talking? Who makes it?

I am running the Genright Alum. corner armor and I ended up getting a piece of Alum.plate the same thickness as the armor and used the Tailgate Reinforcement as a template. Cut it out and mounted it behind the Tailgate Reinforcement part and worked out great.
