TJ Fest 2021 - Moab (April 24 – May 1, 2021)

Radios are great and all but just keeping the guy behind you in sight takes care of most all issues. I have a handheld and half the time I can't find the thing because it made it's way under a seat. Great thing about a hand held is that when I do find it I can get out of the jeep and take it with me to stand around and talk to others who have the same radios in their hands.

I wheel with guys who use radios non-stop and have actual conversations, tell jokes, rip on each other, etc... all day long on the radios. And I wheel with guys who don't say a word on the radios the whole time, they are basically just for emergency. I am good either way, just if you don't see me in your rearview anymore, slow up until I catch up.

If you have a CB radio you are living in the past.

I turned 50 2 weeks ago. I've been living in the past, since, well, the past.

CB stuff is dead. People need to get on-board with GMRS because IMHO it is replacing CB.

.....but it keeps us off of CB, which at this point just seems like a dead technology.

I don't see a reason to cancel, I'm sure other rigs will be there that have either HAM or CB as well.

I will be there. With a CB. And I guess some other newly purchased radio technology.

Old may be a better term. But again, still functional. GMSR may be better. Stronger. Longer. And have the stamina to last a whole night with (choose 5 or 6 hot famous chicks). But CB is well established on many rigs.

I won’t get rid of my CB, I’ve never had an issue using it in the trails. Until now. It’s what everyone I know uses.

Neither will I. I realize this is a Jeep forum. Usually means an off-road forum at the same time. But there still is no better way to communicate with someone you come across on the superslab, than CB. In my opinion.

I have been thinking about picking up a pair of 2-way radios for driving to/from car shows (not jeep gatherings) for communications among a couple of cars for keeping the group together, or if we get split, where the leader parked, etc,. So, I'm not entirely opposed to having to buy something for the Moab trip on top of the other expenses. I'm not intending to step on Chris' toes, as it is his forum, his fest. I'm just offering up, that CB isn't dead. At all. Yes, other avenues for communication are probably nipping on its heels, or surpassing it. Nobody is using bag phones in their vehicles anymore.

I do have a question though. Is my Android phone ok for Moab? Or is this an Apple event?

Listening to trucker talk (on occasion) has kept the wife and I entertained (and informed) for thousands of miles over the years on 2 wheels across the country. It has issues too. Like the person on the west side of St. Louis that has their mic keyed up 24/7 broadcasting some gospel tv or radio show across channel 19. Been a year or 2 since I've been through there, but for 3 or 4 years, every time we went through there, about lunch time, yep, keyed up.

Those things will work just fine with GMRS, and if you don't end up using them much after the trip, your kids (if you have kids) might enjoy them

I originally bought them for jeep runs, but used them more for my wife to help me guide the RV in it's resting spot.

I appreciate the offer, and don't expect it was all for me, and while I would normally say us Chris (or Christophers) should stick together, I will most likely be dipping my toes on the kiddie pool trails while you heavy hitters are diving off the 10m towers. Besides, it could get hairy, if somehow we ended up on the same channel, 25 miles apart, and I'm trying to navigate a bottle cap, and you're giving directions to someone on the Escalator, I could end up running over a chipmunk.

I suppose it could still happen, I'll just be on my own GMRS radio and not have the out of blaming it on a borrowed tool, LOL.

The upside to no kids, is my garage is full and my driveway is full. The downside is stopping random strangers on the street and asking them if they'd like to be my beneficiary.

Not really sure. I think the handheld options can only run 5 watts max, and no option for adding a bigger antenna.

Yep, signal strength. The one I bought for $250 is the most powerful one Midland makes. It should have over 50 miles of range with no obstructions.

I won’t get rid of my CB, I’ve never had an issue using it in the trails. Until now. It’s what everyone I know uses.

I've been on many runs where the guy in front of the pack can't talk to the guy in back on CB, but a 15w GMRS comes through loud and clear.

I have both now, I prefer GMRS, just sounds better and works better. I don't like a big radio box on the dash though so I put this one in:
