It's a great trail though. It's technical enough to be interesting but not difficult. I let the GF drive it last time we were there, she did the entire trail.
My SIL & her husband are flying in from NY to join us on Wednesday, he's renting a Jeep for the rest of the week. I'll be taking them on Fins. They'll get a kick out of it.

Hell's minus the major obsticals is not much different really. Doing Fins then Hells at the beginning of the trip will give you a good idea where you fall on the difficulty scale.

That's what I've heard - on Hell's you can take bypasses around the more difficult stuff?

You may need to have them check with the rental company, many of the more difficult trails are prohibited for the rental jeeps. My daughter and her family will be joining us and we found that out. I think all the companies run GPS trackers on the jeeps so they know where you are, it is a healthy add on charge if you get caught. Seems like I saw Fins on that list as well as Hells, plus many more. They will know for sure when they get the jeep.

I've seen a lot of rental jeeps on hells and fins. I've even seen them all the way out on elephant hill. Still good to know the rules.

He's a doctor, hopefully smart enough to read the rental clause

I just read through their site again, and I don't see fins mentioned on the list. I'm sure they will be fully advised when they are there for pick up.
Still good info for those renting to pay attention to. I couldn't imagine paying $1000 to run fins.

Yeah, that's where my BIL is renting. From the site:

"PROHIBITED AREAS AND TRAILS: The following areas and trails are prohibited due to the nature and difficulty of the trail. Inexperienced drivers can cause harm to themselves and the Jeep while on these trails. Moab Rim, Golden Spike, Behind the Rocks, Pritchett Canyon, Poison Spider, Hell’s Revenge, Metal Masher, Steel Bender, Gold Bar Rim, Cliffhanger, Kane Creek Canyon, Top of the World, Strike Ravine, Porcupine Rim, Rose Garden, Potato Salad Hill, Area BFE, Rusty Nail or any other extreme off road trails."

I love the last one "or any other extreme off road trails" talk about a CYA

Can you imagine what their equipment would look like if they didn't. I spend a good amount of time in the Ouray Colorado area every year running the trails and the only runs I'm aware of that are prohibited for the rentals are Black Bear and Poughkeepsie, Black Bear was a great scenic trail but not that impressive as far as needing any skill other than common sense and the ability to steer.

I got yelled at by foreigners in rental Jeeps before. They were pissed because we started Elephant hill and then aired down on the trail.

They had six jeeps and the rule was only 3 jeeps could start every 30 minutes. Had I let two groups go we'd have had to sit there for 1.5 hours before we could start.

They never aired down their rentals and we sat behind the same people struggling on trails the day before, wasting our time wasn't doing it again.

They were really pissed.

They beat the snot out of those jeeps, really thought they were gonna roll on hells when we saw them.

How many days do I have?
