Ok for all you out there that are not mechanically endowed your Jeep TJ is a descendant of the WW2 Jeep and like the WW2 jeep they are stupid easy to work on. The WW2 jeeps were built this way to be field serviced by anyone with a basic set of tools and under adverse conditions, and so is your TJ. Don't be scared grab some wrenches and fix your broke shit, hell in my day we did not have the trusty you tube college of knowledge we had to buy a repair manual, There is a great satisfaction of knowing the job was done right cause you did it. Those expensive mechanic bills you keep paying will more than cover the cost of the tools you need to do your repairs. If you can wipe your ass you can fix your jeep.
Here is the stuff you should be able to do without to much worry
Oil Change
Rotate your tires
Air filter
Diff Oil
Gear Oil
Brakes
Shocks
U joints
Unit Bearings
Ball Joints (Specialty Tool Required)
Tie Rod Ends
Sensors
change the battery
Alternator
Starter
Water Pump
there is a ton of other stuff but these are good confidence builders for more challenging projects like that lift kit you have been wanting or the Axle Swap
Don't be scared grab a beer a Grab those wrenches
Also Don't cheap out on tools buy the best you can afford even of you can't
So as not to overwhelm you here is a tool list to get you started
A good Floor Jack
6 ton Jack Stands, gets your rig up high enough to work on not because it weighs 6 tons
A moving blanket to lay on when you are working underneath your rig
Torque Wrench this is a must have
Basic set of SAE and Metric Wrenches sockets screw drivers pliers
Prybar
Hammers Steel Brass and Rubber deadblow
Test Light / Multi Meter
A ball joint press also good for pressing U joints OTC makes a really good one
Plumbers Propane Torch jeeps are legendary for stuck nuts and bolts little heat usually does the trick
Can of Marine Grade Anti Seize so you don't need the torch the next time
Good Work Light
Latter you can add the following
Air Compressor
Bench Top Grinder
Air Tools note I use an electric impact to avoid dragging hoses around but I also have my Air Impacts
20 ton Press needed especially for rear axle seal replacement
Transmission Jack
Welder and Cutting torch and associated tools for Custom Fabrication Bumpers, Nerf Bars, Long arm lifts, axle trusses ect.
There are probably other tools / Specialty tools but this list will get better than get you started for most of your Jeep related repairs and upgrades
