I sold the Midland and got this one,

It is very compact, 20 watts, and has all the features I wanted. Pleased with it so far.

How’s the volume on those units? My biggest complaint about the Midland MXT-115 is even with the volume maxed out sometimes it’s still to low to hear.

I can hear it ok while driving on the highway without doors. better than my CB.

The remote speakers are fairly inexpensive as another option.

Yeah, I was gifted one a while back I never used. I finally ran the wire up the sport bar and between the front seats (I’ll likely move it to just by the driver side ear for a cleaner cab look).

Some of these radios have a speaker in the base unit and one in the mic as well. That is a nice feature for a Jeep envirnment.

On my Midland 275 I run a remote speaker mounted on the windshield frame just above the rear view mirror. It puts the sound right at ear level. I run the remote speaker and the mic speaker concurrently, and that does a good job even with the top off. I can even hear it over the screams of my passengers…

If you decide to access repeaters, you need to buy a GMRS licence to be legal, and buy a part 95E compliant radio for GMRS. As you likely know by now, having watched Randy's videos, a uv5r is a Ham radio, and not legal to transmit on GMRS frequencies.

GMRS License is FCC law regardless of whether repeaters are used. 10yr, $70, covers ENTIRE family; in laws, cousins, grandkids...
I'm not the FCC radio police but y'all should have the info.
