One other thing that came to mind is when I talked with Mac’s previously they said to leave the straps really loose when you start ratcheting them. You want to have a lot of strap in the mechanism.

That's really helpful. I haven't been doing that so maybe a practice change on my part will stop the "stretching"--perhaps it's not really stretching but it is slipping.

I also wonder what happens to a 35" tire tied down if it goes flat, but as @DaveF pointed out what are the chance of a stake pocket being in the right spot.
After watching the guy tie down my Jeep this weekend, to haul it away, it was so much easier to secure it at the wheel. Securing it by the axle is such a pain and I have yet to figure out an easy way to do that. I'll happily take any pointers there!
