In my old industry we had bolts fail due to their plating from hydrogen embrittlement. Granted they were 3” diameter but if you had grade 8 I would guess it was likely something like that.

I buy most of my hardware at the local CAT dealer. They have an excellent reputation for high quality hardware. Go to your local dealer and ask for a current copy of “One Safe Source” or download a copy.

Will you be in AZ after the 15th or still in Oregon? Have you found someone in Az to do the engine swap/outboarding or are you going to do it yourself?

I haven’t looked for anyone in Arizona to the the outboard, but I may do it myself. I know how to do it, I just don’t know how to weld. If I do the cutting, I could get a good mobile welder to come by and weld them in place for me.

That’s likely what I’ll end up doing to be honest.

You may want to consider getting one just so you can tack the mounts in place while cycling. Once you have them in place maybe a local member who can weld can burn them in or call a mobile service. In the long run buying a welder made sense to me.

You read my mind, as buying a welder was the end goal. Like you said, even just being able to tack them in place while cycling would be a huge help.

Today's machines make learning how to weld pretty painless TBH. Just get a bunch of scrap steal in different thicknesses and practice laying down. Do 90's, 45's, piece 2 together. With practice you'll be amazed how quickly you'll gain your confidence. Get a good, comfortable pair of gloves and a good auto darkening helmet, and some welding pliers. I prefer TIG gloves for a better feel.
That is a sweet looking wheel. I like the combo of polished and black. Also makes it easier to touch up the bead rim when you kiss rocks.

Wouldnt you want the Vanco BBK? Doesn't it require 17’s?

Buy a welder Chris. A MIG is a simple thing to learn, either self taught or take a few classes.

Its been a while. I would say since at least 2004, give or take 2 or so years. That is around the year when China offered a 17% subsidy on cast aluminum wheels.

Very few American companies could compete with compaines that once made their stuff in the USA, who were now making their wheels for cheaper in China.

Blaine has a 15" big brake kit.

The selection of C rated tires in 17" applications is just terrible, I'll say that much.

Yeah, I knew they were made in China. It's unfortunate, but these days it's hard to avoid.

I really like this wheel design though personally.

The 15" is more than enough for 35's. I can lock mine easily. Anymore braking power would appear to be useless to me. I'd imagine the 17" kit would be too much brake for 35's.
