The last time I took the Nth skid off and balanced that heavy mother fucker while I put the bolts in I swore it would be the last time I raised a skid without a cross member.

Sounds identical to my experience installing the Rokmen skid. That thing was a son of a bitch. I pressed it up on my chest (like a bench press), held it in place with my knees, and managed to get a bolt going on each side to support the weight.

After that I told myself I'm doing an aluminum skid plate next time!

Okay, I went back and found where you updated. You'll enjoy the half doors.

Yep, I already do. It will keep the tires from kicking up too much stuff when going off-road.

With the doors off entirely, I remember that being an issue.

The glass sliders are nice. Before I owned a set, I totally dismissed them as crap.

Yes, that's why I'd have to try them, because right now they seem like crap being that you only get half the window open.

Guess I need to try a set!

Nice find @Chris! I think you made a good decision though I'm interested to see how you like the manual transmission while wheeling!

I know it will be trickier than an auto, but I'm not sure how much technical wheeling I am going to be doing versus just exploring, lighter stuff, and having fun. I don't want this thing to be a "rock crawler" by any definition.

I can tell you so far I enjoy it much more on the road!

In other news, Savvy is slow with shipping, as always.

They did respond to my email though this morning and said that my bumper and taillights would likely be going out this week. She said they only had one person fulfilling shipping orders, so they are very backed up.

I placed the order on April 28th, so we'll see.

It will be great in the rocks if you choose to do so. Your stock crawl ratio is around 73:1 I did the rubicon with close to 56:1. With the new atlas I'll be at 97:1.

A hand throttle is nice when you're halfway up an obstacle and need to stop. I think as you get some seat time you'll have a blast with it offroad.

Congrats on the new TJ and yes half doors are the way to go IMHO. I've always wanted to get those upper sliders but never did and now that it's a trail Jeep there really isn't any reason for me to.

Like those headlights so I'll be watching to see how you like them. Even though I have an auto tranny now I miss rowing the gears sometimes. With my leg I'm glad I have the auto but having the ability to choose what gear you want to be in is great and you'll get the hang of it off-road.

One suggestion is to install a line lock like they sell for drag cars. Put a push-pull switch on your shifter so you can set and release it with your hand on the shifter. Then when you need to you step on the brake, activate the line lock and it'll hold it there. Then when you are ready you ease out the clutch and as you feel it start to push against the locked tires you release the brakes. It keeps you from rolling back and works great once you get use to it. It isn't for long term situations of leaving it activated but I had it on my CJ-5 and loved it.

that sounds super interesting. What’s the advantage of that over using the parking brake in that scenario?

Trying to reach down and release the parking brake takes your hand off the shifter. Doing this keeps your hand on the shifter and able to change gear or slap it into reverse if you need to. I also did this mod on my ex father-in-laws TJ so I know it will work. Also sometimes having your front tires locked instead of your rears is better. I'll try to find the switch I used. I have one somewhere. If you have ever been in the cab of a semi it's the same switch used if they have a multi-speed transmission.

It's like this switch that BD is using and this comes with the clamp to mount it to your shifter. It is a little pricey.
