When you think about the horsepower and tire size you run compared to anything factory it makes sense. GM would spec a much larger axle for that application.

When you think about the horsepower and tire size you run compared to anything factory it makes sense. GM would spec a much larger axle for that application.
Next iteration: I decreased the pinion depth buy 3 thou to 15 thou. Backlash is 5 thou.
Feels close - any suggestions? I'm thinking go back deeper a thou or two.

Sorry for being late to the party! Been out cutting brackets off an axle, and everyone knows how much that sucks.
Since the 14 bolt is low pinion and the rear axle, we want to make sure the drive side is good. Looking at your most recent patterns, the drive side looks good- maybe 1-2 thou shallow. BUT, your coast side looks deep? I'm looking on my phone so difficult to tell....

That's my take on the pictures too. But I'm not sure that the coast side is so deep as to matter? I guess try adding the recommended shims and see what the patterns look like.
Jeff, I think I see MY issue. Can you take a pic at more of an angle facing the teeth? I think it's messing with my eyes looking at it almost straight on...
The drive side photo is better. When you look at the pics I attached here, the red line indicates your angle where the green line indicates the preferred angle.
The second pic is the angle I'm talking about that will show the face of the tooth best. The third pic is an exaggeration but you can see how it's difficult to look at.
With that said, you are within 1 or 2 thou I think.

Thanks Mike. I’ll do it. With the 14 bolt, it only takes about 10 minutes, start to finish, to change pinion depth and get a new pattern…

Jeff, after looking at these latest pics on a big desktop screen, I think you may be there with the pattern. You can try 1 thou and see what difference it makes but this pattern looks great.

I had to give up motorcycle and snowmobile riding because one weekend of riding would literally take a year of recovery. It sucks. Last year I played soccer once with a bunch of teenager and twenty-somethings and it took 10 months for my knees to recover. In the midst of that I started needing 2.0+ readers with contacts just to read my phone, instruction manuals, and books. Arghhh…
Looking good Jeff. I thought you were nearly there with the 15 thou and 5 thou. Seemed like you did it pretty quick from my end of things. Great write up.
I do not have a shim stack which will yield 1 thou deeper to get to 14 thou. Closest I can get is to go 2 thou deeper to 13 thou. Backlash is 6 thou.

Looking at this closely, and comparing the drive side closeup on the 015 to the same pic on the 013, it looks to my eye that the pattern on the 015 (the shallower pinion setup) may be running off the heel (outside) of the tooth just a bit compared to the 013. But overall, the 015 appears to be more centered between the heel and the toe.

The coast side looks deep to me. that line is so pronounced and straight.
My thoughts too, and it looks that way in both setups.
But look at this, crazy shallow at 032 thou - the pattern still looks deep at the root on the coast side. Even though it is clearly way shallow between the heel and the toe.
I think your pattern in post 2968 is the one to use. I agree, this one went too deep.
