I couldn’t resist re-posting this post I found by
@Chris in November of 2018 about the 42rle.
“In addition, most of us (myself included) would not consider the 42RLE an upgrade to the 32RH. I'd rather have a 32RH any day over my 42RLE, which is a horrible transmission to begin with.
The 42RLE never belonged in any Wrangler in the first place. It's extremely steep .69 overdrive gear ratio is horribly thought out. The transmission is ALWAYS hunting for overdrive, never knowing if it wants to be in 3rd gear or 4th. It does this to the point where it's mind-numbing. While it can be not as bad with the proper gearing, it's still nowhere near perfect.
This transmission was designed fro FWD Dodge vehicles as I understand, and again, never belonged in a Wrangler to begin with. Jeep put it there (this is my understanding) as a means to satisfy EPA regulations with the overdrive gear.
It's an absolute joke of a transmission. @psrivatswill agree with me on this.
The ONLY good thing about the 42RLE is the fact that you can put a RubiCrawler behind it. Other than that, I'd happily trade mine for a 32RH any day. Consider yourself lucky!”
