I don’t doubt they are great. Just trying to understand in my mind how they stay together while in use Since I’ve never seen one used in person.

A couple more questions:

1) So, using @TJ Starting ’s last picture as a reference, would you set it up to use with let say the right right of his shackle in the shackle mounting point on a bumper and the winch cable on the left side of the shackle? Keeping the knot in the center of the loop while in use?
Put the knot somewhere away from either anchor point. Don't overthink it.

2) Some I’ve seen come with a sleeve. Is that for putting on the shackle if your bumpers shackle mounting point doesn’t have rounded edges?

Thanks for all the info. Just trying to learn a little more.
The sleeve does nothing the same way a sleeve on a winch rope does nothing. The presence or absence of the sleeve means nothing.

I was thinking that, but then seen in the TRE website that they show a picture with the knot at one end.

Thanks again for the info.

@tworley , sorry for derailing your build thread. I should have posted my questions in a new post. You can delete them if you want.

All from TRE? I've heard of a couple other companies that make the soft shackles. Who makes the best?

I've only used the TRE version of the soft shackle. I can't comment on other brands. Plus @Garza is a member here so it feels good to support him.

No problem at all! I enjoy the discussion, recovery is still something I am fairly new at.

I have a GatorJaw soft shackle in addition to my two TRE soft shackles and huge soft shackle (tree saver edition). The GatorJaw has done every recovery I've wanted it to and towed plenty of small race cars around. It is still in good shape and I've had it for at least 4, maybe 5 years. Though I haven't used the TRE's yet, they seem higher quality and are a bit stiffer and a little thicker. I think they will last a bit longer but keep in mind I wheel so infrequently that I'll basically never wear a soft shackle out. If you wheel every weekend, the TRE's will probably last longer and be worth the extra money.

EDIT: Nevermind, the GatorJaw is more expensive. Just buy the TRE.

@tworley I don't want to invade your build so if you'd like me to move this elsewhere please let me know!

Just a little food for thought.....Here are my personal soft-shackles I use on a regular basis. Everything from yard work to full trail vehicle recovery. These go in the same bag and everywhere I go. From my tow-rig to my Jeep. 4 of these soft shackles are ones I built over 7 years ago!! (2nd pic) They have been used and abused. They go against what all these "recovery experts and companies" say is a useful life, must be replaced, blah blah blah. I get asked all the time why I don't always use brand new ones since I make them? That's easy, would you rather see how they hold up under abuse and use, or me always show you a new one? I try all the time to break them. So far behind my 9,000lb+ Ram Megacab doing full 4-low pulls on pavement I've managed to bend two 5/8" hitch pins. Behind my Jeep on trail recoveries they speak for themselves. That's with our standard soft-shackle! Will they eventually break, will they wear out? I'm sure at some point they will...that's to be determined. I don't use any sheathing (on purpose). I'm not saying don't be smart about how you use them, simply don't be afraid to use them!!

Ricky

Here's something that I've been putting off for a year; the interior door latch would not work. Also the interior door strap had lost its screws.

Where did you find that upper plug / panel holder from the last photo? My half doors have been missing that since I took them apart a few years ago since I couldn't find the correct clip.

Huh, I didn't see any I thought would fit when I checked the part stores. Those look a little different than the ones that I pulled out, but I'll have to give them a shot. Thanks.
It fit hole on the inner door and I heard the ribs snap in as I pushed on the panel. The panel is very tight now. Its not grey to match but im not worried about that (look at the rest of my heap).

Looking back on 2020! Unfortunately with fires, nasty weather coming in, covid, its time to call it a year. Had an absolute blast.

April included Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap.
