Work from home LJ

Swapped headlight switch and it stopped the buzzing in my sound bar but didnt fix backlights on cluster or HVAC. This points to a ground issue. So today is going to be spent looking again

Continuing on with my diag of the bad illumination circuit (gauges and hvac) - I ran the cluster test last night and got all of these codes. b0, b1, b8 and panel open.

I am starting to lean towards cluster is bad? Jeep drives fine. Rest of my gauges work. Lights for check engine / headlights/etc all work as well. Just no backlit gauges....seems odd unless cluster is on its way out. Pulled cluster after this test - cleaned connectors + checked circuit boards. Nothing looked visibly messed up.

I dont think a single bad ground somewhere would cause all of these.

It seems that either the cluster is bad, or it's a wiring problem. The first three error codes would be caused by a break in the wires for the data link connector near the cluster. There's a PCI bus that connects the cluster, the PCM, the SKIM, and the ACM. I suggest looking at the wiring diagram for the data link connector and trace all those wires from the cluster. The last error code seems like it would be caused by a break in the wiring between the MFS and the cluster. I'd look for a place in the harness where that wiring and the data link connector wires co-exist, and start looking for a cut there.

Ordered a cluster. Can return for free so figured that will help at least eliminate one problem. So far I’m coming up empty on any break.

Will break out multi meter and start more thorough testing if cluster doesn’t work. Time to investigate this weekend is about over

I haven’t put my hard top on LJ in 2 years and am considering selling it. It’s a 2 piece + with some light damage/scuffs to the top.

Will let someone claim it here for a fair price before I post on marketplace.

2 piece? Pic?

This shows roughly the two piece layout. Covers back seat / trunk and the separate piece covers front seat.

I didn’t take pictures but the jeep has had overheating issues since I bought it. Coolant flush resolved the issue and we stayed at 210 for 4 hours on the trail in ~85 degree heat so that problem is resolved.

Took jeep out to Uwharrie for a half day yesterday. Trails were super dusty but wasn’t nearly as crowded as I thought it would be. This is outpost at 1.

Had some heat soak after running for awhile and threw a cylinder 3 misfire code. Didn’t have a scanner on me so I called it a day and headed home. Good item to remember to pack next time. Ordered new exhaust manifold heat shield and the injector cover. Will be here by Wednesday and then I should be good to go again. Need to wire up my compressor next weekend....

Which trails did you ride?

sorry - didnt see this. just the easy stuff and forest roads + walked around lake. Brought my dog for first time and he wasnt having the best time when we dropped on a few rocks early on. Think he will sit out the next rides as I do the fun stuff.

Jeep threw a cylinder 3 misfire from heat soak last weekend at Uwharrie. New heat shield and injector shield showed up yesterday and I threw them on tonight. Should fix the problem. First picture shows my old heat shield. Definitely original and looked like this laying on the exhaust manifold. New one looks shinny again - at least for a few days.

This weekends project is finally installing the dual ARB compressor I bought months ago. Step 1 was ripping the cold air intake off and tossing in the trash. Step 2 was replacing with a 20 year old new (to me) stock version.

Have the wiring harness laid out and need to relocate some other wiring from my lockers. The spots worked when I had the cold air intake but don’t with the stock box.

Hopefully have system working by tonight
