Propane tank strapped underneath

Hi Guys, I recently bought a 2000 TJ from the daughter of owner that have passed away recently

The jeep is in really good condition. However when I took it to the dealership last week they inspected it and told me I had a propane tank strapped underneath and couldn't work on the transfer case fluid as a result.

they asked me if my Jeep ran on propane, of which I had no ideal.

just wondering if you guys have ever seen such a set up before?

I’ve never heard of a TJ running on propane, but the 4.0’s well run on just about anything else, so I suppose it could be done. Can you take pictures of the intake area (under the hood drivers side where all the silver bits are and the big black tube ends) and maybe what’s under that yellow cap on the bumper? ….. I wonder if the PO wasn’t using the propane tank as a refillable OBA supply, but the connector doesn’t look right for that.

That seems pretty low to be rolling around with an exposed propane tank? Never heard of propane on a vehicle but it seems like one misplaced rock and this could end really bad.

You got a fill port and a vent at the rear. Should be some components under the hood as well, and a switch to control what fuel its using someplace. Used to see a lot of propane conversion around here. Burns clean and used to be cheap.

all kinds of off road buggys run propane, worst spot ever for mounting if you plan to use the jeep off road.

that's not your jack on the weak ass control arm is it?

It wasn't on the arm until the jack lifted the frame by the control arm frame mount then the arm moved down to touch the jack pad.

does a propane sys offer anything? seems it's about the size of a 10-15 cell and not as convenient to have filled, can't just run to the corner.

are there any benefits? i thought i read propane doesn't provide the same HP power as gasoline.

No idea. All I know is when I worked in the oil field, all the crew cars were converted so they could get free propane from the rig tanks. They did report that they lasted a lot longer. I have no evidence to back that up but riding in them back and forth to the locations didn't give any indication that they suffered much in the power area if at all.

We had a few propane trucks in the Navy. They needed a very big tank to even get 100 miles out of it. I cant imagine that tank giving much range at all. I was assuming it was a repurposed tank used for air but agree that the fittings dont tell the same story.

So, was the Jeep really converted to propane, or is this just a weird way to carry it to the campsite? The stock gasoline tank is still there. Can a propane conversion switch back and forth?

i've seen a few "kits" available on marketplace. mainly for bouncers and buggies but i did see 1 or 2 set up for 4.0 use, i assume that a major portion are no longer road driven vehicles and range is not a part of it.
unless there is some benefit from it, it just seems like another fuel packaging option and those tapered tail contraptions don't leave much room. i considered it until it wouldn't save me any room over what i have now. i'd not consider the belly an appropriate mounting option.

Fair enough 🤷🏼‍♂️
Just a few examples of what is out there. Lots of RVs have built in tanks that have to be filled in the vehicles, lots of propane conversions in cars are running around, lots of forklifts (not road use but still a bunch of them). Search for Propane, CNG, and similar for more info than you ever needed.

I'm betting it does run on propane. used to work at a airplane catering company back in the early 80's that had about 50 ford f-700 (IIRC) and they all ran on propane. you hooked the hose up where the yellow cap is and turn the little brass thing with the hole in it to vent until propane came out then turned off the pump and closed the vent. either that or some jeep dealership turned that TJ into a rolling grill for cookouts !

a friend of my parents owned a propane delivery company and he converted his truck to propane. said he lost some hp with the conversion. truck struggled to put his large fifth wheel.
