Picking up where I left off

@Midnight LJR, how did you deal with the hub kit and wheel backspacing issue?

It appears these Trail Ready wheels have 3.5" backspacing. Given that the hubs kit pushes the wheels out about .875" per side, that's obviously not going to work very well with 3.5" backspacing.

This is unfortunate as I really like these wheels, but I don't want to compromise off-road performance just for the sake of keeping the wheels. At the same time, I also don't particularly feel like spending close to $3000 on new wheels and tires.
If you buy the wheels and change your mind, ill buy them off you ;)

These wheels are so expensive that I dread having to buy a set of them

I mean no more expensive than the RubiCrawler, but when it takes an hour to mount and balanced each tire, it adds up quick.

Not to mention you can't even get Goodyear MTRs anywhere right now.

Then get a different tire

I’m not running anything but MTRs once these Nittos are done for.

Blaine presented to me that the hub conversion would likely be cheaper than having him chase down the vibration so we decided to go that route.

Then Blaine told me what backspacing I needed.

Now heres the really tricky part, I stayed really really quiet when Blaine talked and then, I listened. Tah-Dah, and just like that my problem was solved!

I did have to buy new wheels, Blaine ended up having a spacer made for the back wheel to bring it out. It makes it very nice because it allowed me to get rid of the wheel adapters which I liked.

Ended up being
17x8.5” 4.75” Backspace
.625” spacer in rear

Your sending you Jeep to Blaine, just wait until he tells you if you even need hubs. My Jeep goes to Blaine’s so I don’t have to think about stuff like this. 😉

Not for nothing but tires can be moved from rim to rim, even used tires.

Maybe on sticky rocks like in Moab. Anything that has dust/gravel or is loose, I don't think so. 4:1 and put the trans in 1st gear until you get to the bottom.

With my manual, 4.88, 35s and 4:1 I can't think of any time I wanted lower gears. I would think the auto would make a really low gear reduction largely irrelevant. I base this on what I've read and my one drive through some larger rocks on a 32rh on 35s. I had all the reduction and control I needed.

I hear you man, this is hurting my head 😆

Split it into a part 2? See what works and when you find a need then upgrade for it?

Absolutely. I think the issue is that with the 42RLE swap and 5.38 gears, it’s almost certainly going to vibrate. I would hate to have to drive it back from California with those vibrations. On my old khaki TJ they were horrible. You remember I’m sure.

I promise you that if there's vibrations they won't be as bad as the khaki TJ was ...even without a hub kit... so long as Blaine is working on it.

My red LJ had zero vibrations until around 85mph when continuing to accelerate (don't do that). So there's a chance.

Assuming you're not wanting to upgrade your front axle shafts right now anyway, I'd let Blaine build and drive it first. If he finds there's vibes, you can discuss a hub kit for it and I'd guess he'd want it to help you with that too.

You'll know if there's vibrations immediately. Not once you're half way home.

Sounds like a good plan. That’s what I am going to do then in the meantime. I’ll stop thinking about it and let Blaine sort it out. I’ll cross my fingers that there are no vibrations, but if there are I’ll see what Blaine suggests from there.

85 in a TJ is scary. I would be happy if I had no vibrations up to 85. I could live with that.

Sounds like a solid plan. More $$$ for other goodies that'll help you get down the trail!

And after looking at another set of these Trail Ready wheels with 4.5” backspacing I’ve learned they are $599 per wheel. That would be $3000 for a set of 5 🤦🏻

That’s a hard pass on my part.

+ $1000 for new front shafts.
+ $800 for the hub kit.
+ $$ for machining work to adapt your brakes

85 is not my number. If you want that number I can give you some pointers to help you work through that process. Otherwise you will have to arrive at a civilized number that is tolerable. Ya'll that think doing 80-85 mph on big tires are just freaking silly and that's me being my most polite.
