Picking up where I left off

Then perhaps it's stupid of me to even put a 42RLE in there in the first place if I'm expecting it to be vibe free up until higher speeds.

I get that the answer is manual hubs, but that is of course going to open up a massive rabbit hole of spending money I don't particularly want to spend, probably to the tune of $5000 or more.

I guess this gives me something to think about then.
You don't have to drive that fast. It that is the teeny little compromise to get everything else to be fucking awesome, so fucking what?

Get the gears and shocks done and use the Jeep for a bit. Find out what it can do and not do. Get some scratches on it.

I agree. It's just a trail rig now anyways. I'll live with the vibes if they exist.

You always said you hated the 42rle

I still do. But for the rocks, I can clearly see the advantage in an automatic now, and nothing else is going to fit as easily as a 32RH.

An AW4 is a steaming pile of shit, and a 32RH might be able to work but it would be a lot more effort than putting in a 42RLE, and at that point the 42RLE is just as good as long as you can turn the OD off.

EDIT: I'll just live with the vibes. It is what it is. It's a trail rig at this point anyways.
A bag of 5/16" zip ties, M18 Fuel 1/4" hex impact driver, a 5/16" bit for it, and that is way cheaper than a hub kit. With that combo it literally takes 5 minutes to drop the front driveshaft and zip tie it up to the frame for your trips on the AZ Autobahn. Buy a 5 dollar Harbor Freight moving blanket to throw down on the dirt so you don't mess up your flat bill and skinny jeans and you're in there.

I’m pretty sure a 32rh swap would be significantly easier than swapping a 42rle but wires don’t scare me.

changing multiple wiring harnesses is much more time consuming than adding a few wires. Also it’s not uncommon to get used harnesses with broken connectors that need to be repaired, among other unknowns.

Edit: I sort of take that back. Making a crossmember VS. bolting it to the skid negates the wiring differences.

You may be right, I don't know enough about either swaps to comment. I do know that @toximus is giving me a good deal on his 42RLE conversion parts though, so there is that. I dislike the 42RLE, but I also dislike the 4.0. They are good at what they are good at though, and that's being reliable and getting the job done.

I don't think the OD on the 42RLE will bother me much anymore either. On my last one I got in the habit of turning the OD off anytime I started it up and eventually it just became second nature.

Also, didn't you mention something about the 32RH not working with the Savvy skid?

Right now the rig doesn't vibrate whatsoever.

It will be interesting to see if upon swapping the 42RLE in and making no other changes (i.e. sticking with the 4.88 gears) if it starts to vibrate.

I'm pretty sure you need to stop fucking this up. Let's operate from the position that you have to do all of the work yourself and then leave me alone to do what I do best.

Blaine knows how to make a mighty fancy skid for the 32rh.

5.38’s and freeway in the same sentence? Aren’t there backroads that are more relaxing to drive on?

Can and do but won't because he already has a skid that works just fine. To make the 42 swap work, all we have to do is swap the trans mount with the other one and its done, bolt the rest back up and call it a day. And lest we forget while we are throwing other people's money around, my custom skid costs more than the Savvy Under Armor when done.
To use the 32, you just puked out a mandatory re-gear because with the 4.88s his top speed gets limited with a quickness unless he wants to run at 3400 at 70 and 3600 rpm at 75 mph all day long.

While not ideal, he can run for quite awhile with that gear set and the 42 and do the re-gear when time and funds allow. He also has concerns that if you do a re-gear, it may be a good idea to swap in non Rubi lockers. I don't have that concern but it is not something to be ignored and adds the cost of a locker to at least the rear axle.

Many of us run the 42RLE with success. It's certainly not the best automatic out there. But it's also not the worst. Also, hubs can help keep the vibrations at bay. However, accepting that it's a Jeep and not an M3, and driving accordingly, will make you a happier person. Well, maybe! ;)

Treat her well @Chris and she'll take care of you.

😭 ...Bye bye old girl... It's been a good 11 years together. 😭

It's fitting that your wife has my former TJ and I will soon have your former transmission.

The universe tends to unfold as it should ;)
