Get in there with a cut off wheel ect. and clean both ends of the flat plate where it is next to the tube to shiny metal and weld the ends to the tube.

This piece is almost worthless and does little more than add weight and not much else provided the ends of the other bit of the truss structure is welded to the axle tube. This is a classic example of keep puking metal all over it until we think it won't fail. It doesn't act as more of a gusset to prevent side to side movement since that is already handled by the boxed truss. If the horizontal ends are welded to the tube and then copied on the front side, you can cut that piece out and never miss it.

Fuck that, throw him the Mig gun, dirty lens in the helmet, and toss him under the rig to get those back welds done. That's how beginners should start, upside down, overhead, tight quarters, helmet out of position, can't see for shit, critical fucking welds, and don't fuck it up.

Well, Adam is good to go again. Really tough access and certainly could've used some different tools/bits, but we got it done none the less. The cracks were all the way through and tough to access and remove. Trying to build up weld was tough with the limited access. The Milwaukee die grinder was great.

Looking at the front side cracks as we ground them down, there was weld on the truss that never burned into the tube as evidenced by the rust underneath. Got it cleaned up and new weld in it's place. On the backside of the axle, the welds was only partial and did not capture the truss very well at all.

@jjvw @hosejockey61 and @mrblaine really bailed me out on this one! Appreciate the knowledge and expertise. Probably could have gone much faster but I kept interrupting & asking questions. That truss was hanging on by hopes and dreams

The big take away might be how little effective weld area might be necessary to hold a truss in place, despite the cracks we fixed.
