Do-anything LJ build advice

Presumption would be ultimately to live to wheel another day.

If it's a cage design issue that says 6 months healing your broken legs before you can wheel again, then maybe it met the function standard but not to the performance level that would be preferred.

But, I only know what you've said and you specifically mentioned no room for feet, no idea why there was no room. Was it the cage? Was it the seat location, harnesses not properly cinched down. I don't know what I don't know. Nor am I versed in the offroad racing world or anything with cages.

Broken legs despite the (presumably) proper and required restraints might fall into the caution of predicting the future to cover all combinations of all possibilities for how an event will play out.

While you can't predict the future you can take precautions to mitigate specific risk but you must recognize the potential for unintended consequences

The better take-away in my mind is the educated guesses we make without crash testing proof. We have an idea of what works, we think we know what works, we test it the worst way possible, with live subjects.

The cramped footwell is what happens when you run the X through the firewall. If you get a good X, it gets in the way of exhaust and whatnot. Get clearance around stuff and the footwells suffer.

What is going on with Savvy? It looks like they’ve been acquired, but the old website is still up. Nothing for our Jeeps on the new site. Are my chances to get a mid arm kit dwindling?

Nothing has changed with Savvy. This is how it has always been with them.

In the midst of installing Savvy UAM and engine skid. Already installed BL and MML.

Discovered a couple days ago that the rear track bar installed by the PO is too long to center the axle. Started looking at Currie parts and fell down the rabbit hole. Bought a set of Currie arms on CL, and the rest of the kit piecemeal from RockJock. So, I needed a $200 trackbar; I bought full lift kit for $2700. 🤣

Dropped the fuel tank last night to raise the skid. Has more fuel in it than I thought, need to transfer some out before I reinstall (heavy.) Also going to fix the fill neck check valve while it’s out.

While the gas tank is out, need to figure out why the rear locker pops open under load.

Winter is gonna be busy, won’t be driving the Jeep for a while!

Related: Also got a Dr Heater garage heater to install.

Savvy x-member installed

@jjvw, how much can I raise the stock gas tank with a Savvy BL? I think you said 1” in your build thread, but can it go higher?

He is correct generally about the 1" number and that is a safe dimension. However, when I was playing with a lot of different TJ tanks for the Savvy gas tank skid, they vary. Best thing to do is get some good light over your current tank and see what the clearances are. You might be able to sneak a few more fractions out of it, might not. Its worth a peek. Some I've done are tight at 1". Others, not so much.

Recommendations for how to sandwich the frame C's on the Savvy UAM? Tested the skid plate last night and it seems the bottom rows of bolts are slightly too close together across the Jeep. Skid won't line up with both sides at the same time.

I assume welding clamps or similar. @mrblaine, what do you use?

I use a big drift.

What size?

(And are we still doing “phrasing?”)

Generally, you need a couple of them. The larger ones have a point that is flattened off to about 3/16" across. That won't always fit into holes that are too far off which the Cs typically do. The next size smaller has a skinnier end so you can start with it and then get the larger one in.

I haven't used these so I don't know how big the largest one is but this is approximately what you need.

Alright, after a week of vacation, I’m back at it. Last night, I got the tank skid cut and raised, and the tank reinstalled. Welded the Currie track bar bracket to the rear axle. Got the last suspension parts in. Plan for tonight is to get the rear wheels back on and set the pinion angle and alignment so I can order a driveline.
