Oh there was plenty of drinking off road back then, and yes the trees were bigger and the branches would kick your ass. But I did watch a buddy have a 1" branch sneak through the grill and destroy the radiator while squeezing between a couple of trees.
If you want us to help you decide, you really need to post pictures of the Jeeps...
I thought it was funny looking at the local facebook marketplace and those two popped up.
It blocks the air flow so the heaters worked better. Us "PO fokes" used a piece of cardboard.

Ye Gods is that thing hideous! I don't have the visceral reaction that some do over the angry grille - it is fugly, but I reserve that level of dislike for smartphones (which one was obviously used to take that picture!). But that bumper is beyond FUGLY! That's beyond double bag ugly, more like coyote ugly!
