How to identify axles on a Jeep Wrangler TJ (and what the difference is with each axle)

Cool thing to do. Looking at mine, my Jeep came with 1/2 doors. Wish I still had those as an option. It also shows an underhood light, which I saw, but have no idea how to turn it on. More searching to be done...

It also shows GVW as 4450#. I was told it has a tow package, is that what this means?

Absolutely. Dana 30 stock is good up to 33’s. If you add chromoly axles it is good up to 35’s.
So, perhaps help me understand the failure mode of these diffs and axles. what is the culprit that causes their failure prematurely when you go up in size? my on and off road applications are very specific so it would help determine if I will be closer to needing replacement or more on the safe side when i jump into my 33s

Rolling mass causing undue stress on the axles. Other stuff can break too. You can always play with it until you break it, then upgrade.

The rule of thumb is Dana 30 and Dana 44 will be fine up to 33's wheeling in any conditions. Dana 30 is smaller, of course, but up front it doesn't see the kind of stress the rear sees.
The Dana 30 and Dana 44 will be fine up to 35's if you replace the stock axles with chromoly.
Some wheel Dana 30 and Dana 44 with chromoly with 37's but you are in serious danger. You should go to Dana 60's or a custom setup if you go to 37's or more.

So I just picked up a 2006 LJ and I’m trying to figure out what it has for a lift maybe 3”?

Front 30 and back 44’s?

This looks like a Dana 30 front and ford 8.8 rear? I’m assuming the brake line has the valve in it to reduce brake pressure to the rear due to the disk brakes on the ford axle? I wonder how I would identify what ford the rear axle came from, sooner or later I’ll need parts like brakes or gears etc.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I need help and I'm knew to the forum. I've had a dana 35 in my jeep since I got it 12 years ago when I was 15. I'm fiscally in the ball Park for a Dana 44! Woot! A guy is selling one about an hour away that he says came from a 99 wrangler. But it has a rubber plug and this weird thing that looks like it bolts onto the to of the housing. What is it?! Btw, he wants $325. It also has a limited slip in it.

P.S. is this where I should post this?

Jeep Liberty? Definitely not from a TJ. None of the brackets are correct.

cover doesn't look quite right to me. and rear disks makes it newer, looks more like it's an aluminum center from a newer JGC. but they didn't have that gizmo up top.

i could be wrong

Thank you! I was so confused! Will it still work in my tj? Probably not without a lot of work right?

None of the brackets are in the right places, except maybe the spring seats. Maybe. Beyond that, I don't know anything else about that axle.

Trying to match the above info with my build sheet 1998 Sahara (RHD - export model for UK) - which has the following on gearing:

DGA All 3-Speed Automatic Transmissions
DGGS 3-Spd. Automatic 32RH Transmission
DHAP Lock-Up Torque Converter
DHNS Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System
DJJS Dana 30/186MM Front Axle
DMMP 3.07 Rear Axle Ratio
DRKS Heavy Duty Dana 44 Rear Axle

DSAP Trac-Lok Differential Rear Axle

Is there a difference between 181mm and 186mm which mine says it has?
Also - I have the DANA 44 but it states 3.07 rear axle - but original post states stock gear ratio options are 3.55 (97 only) and 3.73?

Can anyone add any insight - or could it just be typos in 22 year old info?

Thanks

Sorry to bring up and old post I got a TJ Wrangler 1998 automatic sports 4 litre 6cyclinder and I certain I running a Dana 44 in the rear but I not 2 sure about the front help would be muchly appreciated
