You beat me to it...;) I've had both the Pontiac slant-four and the International slant-four in my family. A '63 Tempest and an early Scout (forgotten the year). Both are cool little engines!

The early Scout's had a 152 " slant 4 .

I guess a V6 in a flatfender has been a thing for a while. I recently met this guy on a club trail run in OR (the Oregon CNT event on the Mcgrew trail). I'm no expert on this era of Jeep but I think he said it was a '42. At some point, it got a Buick Dauntless V6 and also had some odd looking early d44s.

A search says this is a 160hp motor. That's better than the 60hp L134 flathead "Go Devil" you have now but way down vs the 4300 vortec you are planning. Guys who frequent the thread about other cars ( https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/car-pics-too-cool-not-to-share.59109/page-1924) like @Squatch, @ColoJeep, @BlueC and others could probably tell me a lot more about either of those V6s.

Welp I learned to drive in a CJ 2A with the 134 L head (60 hp), started wheeling with a 57 FC 150 with the 134 F head (72 hp) and then bought a spanky new 68 CJ 5 with the optional Buick 225 V6 and 4.88 gears. It was more than eye opening. With a small Holley 4bbl, headers, and a Warn overdrive, the overall performance of that CJ wasn't much different than the POS JKUR I had but the low end torque of the 225 worked WAY better than the 3,6L off road. I still have that CJ pretty much in the same form it was about 1972. Would I swap that engine into anything today? Nope. Way less aftermarket support and way higher prices than comparable pieces for a Chevy 4.3 and you can get native efi for the latter.

V8's they are not but a monumental improvement over the 4 cylinders. That said, I'm a die hard torque junkie and if I'm going to all the work to swap an engine, it is going to be something with a LOT of bottom end torque. It just makes life so much more pleasant both on and off road.
 
Basically, they just cut off 2 cylinders from the V8. With a 225 ci V6, it must be cut from a 300 ci V8.
Correct. It should be noted that the earlier Buick V6 (198) doesn't share many parts with the 225. It was based on the 215 V8 platform. The later 231 odd fire Buick shares a lot of parts with the 225.

Why not a Dana 44 offset for the D18? Go 30 spline or 33 spline or 35 spline for the added strength... Locker or a TruTrac

Here's what I've come up with. Dana 44 rear. Cut off the axle ends to narrow and offset. Then weld on some set 20 bearing cups. Have 30 spline semi float 5x5.5 axle shafts made. Figure out how to adapt my current disk brake setup

Why not go with a full float system? When I was building a Dana 44 for my Samurai that was what I did.

Since I'm not totally familiar with the older Flatties, are they narrower than the old CJ5? I'd always thought they were the same width.

Couple of thoughts...
Cost. It adds up
Although you get 30 spline inners... you're restricted to 27 spline outers... and they forget to mention... you cannot pull the axle shaft out without also removing the spindle... the 30 spline side is too large to fit through the bore. Still not a terrible setup.

you can reuse the factory jeep hubs and spindles... but same problem, can't fit a 30 spline through the bore. You CAN use chevy spindles and ford hubs to keep the 5x5.5 bolt pattern, and the chevy spindles are robust enough you can machine the bore to slip a 30 spline through. But it just keeps adding up.

or go with weld on set 20 axle ends, custom shafts (going to have to have custom shafts on all options.) and a simple semi float design. I've been using semi float axles my whole life without problems. At least right now this seems like the easiest option, leaving monies for an selectable locker.

What would be cool? Some kind of 30 spline unit bearing setup. Maintenance free, clean, easy to replace. But I do not know if I can find a 30 spline 5x5.5 unit bearing. I can probably fabricate the cup for the axle
