Work from home LJ

Hour 2. It’s clear someone has been in here before. Snap rings and retaining rings are out of “order” based on what factory says, lots of RTV everywhere.

With some of these stories, I like to pretend there's a world where the PO either a) is made aware and ashamed of themselves or b) laughed about the shit the next owner had to deal with.

I better never sell my Jeep now that I think about it.

Oh mine can never be sold to anyone outside of this group. My wife even knows to log in to this group and message Chris to get it listed if I randomly pass away

She will probably list it for 5k. And if that’s the case someone better buy it and enjoy every second. Our sc property tax bill valued Jeep at $875 dollars.

What?! I just paid mine and it was only $88.

Edit: Never mind, I misread that. I thought that was your bill. o_O

Valued at 875, tax bill was 26 bucks. Mine is an 04 so maybe that’s why it was so low? 20 year exemption?

IDK how SC values vehicles, but NC switched to NADA values about 10-15 years ago, which is bullshit.

Newport News assessed my '06 LJ at $5424. The original tax amount was $122, but they do have some kind of tax relief program that reduced my bill to $78. This is for 6 months, so $156 for this year. Even with the DMV fees, I'm way ahead compared to California. No personal property tax, per se, but the community you live in, the county you live in, any special assessment districts you live in, get to tack on their "fees" (it's not a tax!!!!) onto your DMV registration.

Finally got tail housing of the transfer case apart. Took forever to get last retaining ring off.

Found out I misplaced my 10mm 12 point socket so ordered a new one. Wont be delivered til tomorrow so….time for a beer and some light reading….i know @NashvilleTJ will appreciate this one.

Dont have any immediate plans to start a v8 conversion. Haven’t decided LS vs Hemi yet…..but might start accumulating parts this winter

Case is RTVd back together and drying now. Will put tailhousing back on later tonight and hopefully drop in new TW drive shaft.

Hardest part of job so far was getting the snap/retaining rings off while disassembling. Will update if anything else gives me trouble.

Job is done. New driveshaft was just bolted in. Im letting jeep sit for night to make sure there are no leaks and then will set pinion angle and take it for a drive.

Knock on wood, SYE install was way easier than I thought. It seemed hard and is why I put it off for months. I did job with case in the jeep and besides a few hard to remove snap rings it was smooth sailing.

I debated for a while on how to do mine but ended up pulling the case out. It was pretty easy using my transmission jack. If I didn’t have the jack, I may have chose to leave it in.

I should buy one of those. Haven’t done so yet but I’m sure it’s useful

It is. I’ve used it more for fuel tanks and bumpers than I have transmissions/transfer cases. 😄 Years ago me, my youngest son and a friend of his pulled the transmission and transfer case from his lifted ‘85 4Runner. We had to stack 6x6’s and 1x6’s on a small floor jack. It wasn’t fun and felt very dangerous but we got it done without losing any fingers or toes. I bought the transmission jack I have now at harbor freight shortly after. I’m not sure if it would have lifted high enough on his truck without still having to put a block of wood to fill the space, but I definitely would have been more stable. Just last month I bought him one from harbor freight because he’s going to be putting his motor and transmission into another, way less rusted out, 4Runner body. I didn’t want him having to try the balancing act we did about 15 years ago. The price for them at HF had gone up considerably than when I got one. I used one of their super coupons and got $100 off, I think.
